由各種病原體引起的能在人與人、動物與動物或人與動物之間相互傳播的一類疾病。病原體中大部分是微生物，小部分為寄生蟲，，寄生蟲引起者又稱寄生蟲病。有些傳染病，防疫部門必須及時掌握其發(fā)病情況，及時采取對策，因此發(fā)現(xiàn)后應(yīng)按規(guī)定時間及時向當?shù)胤酪卟块T報告，稱為法定傳染病。中國目前的法定傳染病有甲、乙、丙3類，共35種。
傳染病的特點是有病原體，有傳染性和流行性，感染后常有免疫性。有些傳染病還有季節(jié)性或地方性。傳染病的分類尚未統(tǒng)一，有人按病原體分類，有人按傳播途徑分類。傳染病的預(yù)防應(yīng)采取以切斷主要傳播環(huán)節(jié)為主導(dǎo)的綜合措施。傳染病的傳播和流行必須具備3個環(huán)節(jié)，即傳染源（能排出病原體的人和／或動物）、傳播途徑（病原體傳染他人的途徑）及易感者（對該種傳染病無免疫力者）。若能完全切斷其中的一個環(huán)節(jié)，即可防止該種傳染病的發(fā)生和流行。各種傳染病的薄弱環(huán)節(jié)各不相同。在預(yù)防中應(yīng)充分利用。除主導(dǎo)環(huán)節(jié)外對其他環(huán)節(jié)也應(yīng)采取措施，只有這樣才能更好地預(yù)防各種傳染病。
