【摘要】：本杰明·惠勒(Benjamin wheeler),20世紀(jì)初美國(guó)著名的高等教育改革家,曾留學(xué)德國(guó),回國(guó)后在著名學(xué)府康奈爾大學(xué)任教。受德國(guó)大學(xué)及康奈爾大學(xué)辦學(xué)模式的影響,惠勒逐漸形成自己的治校理念。1899年他接受加州大學(xué)的邀請(qǐng)成為該校的第八任校長(zhǎng),在其治校理念的指導(dǎo)下,惠勒對(duì)加州大學(xué)進(jìn)行了全面的改革,包括學(xué)科建設(shè)、資金建設(shè)、教師隊(duì)伍建設(shè)等等。改革后的加州大學(xué)不僅重新贏得了社會(huì)的尊重與信賴,由基礎(chǔ)相對(duì)薄弱的西部州立院校逐漸成長(zhǎng)為美國(guó)一流的研究型大學(xué),同時(shí)對(duì)加州其他類型公立院校的創(chuàng)建與發(fā)展發(fā)揮了重要的影響作用,從而奠定和鞏固了加州大學(xué)在加州公立高等教育領(lǐng)域的主導(dǎo)地位。加州大學(xué)之所以會(huì)在較短時(shí)間內(nèi)成為世界一流大學(xué),這與惠勒校長(zhǎng)是分不開的。本文以此為對(duì)象,在對(duì)其進(jìn)行歷史追溯及梳理的基礎(chǔ)上,嘗試對(duì)惠勒校長(zhǎng)的治校理念及其對(duì)加州大學(xué)的改革實(shí)踐進(jìn)行總結(jié)與概括,以便為我國(guó)的大學(xué)發(fā)展及改革提供良好的借鑒。
[Abstract]:Benjamin Wheeler, a famous American reformer in higher education in the early 20th century, studied in Germany and taught at Cornell University. Under the influence of the German University and Cornell University, Wheeler gradually formed his own idea of running a school. In 1899, he accepted the invitation of the University of California to become the eighth president of the University of California, under the guidance of his governing philosophy. Wheeler carried out a comprehensive reform of the University of California, including discipline building, funding, faculty building, and so on. Not only did the reformed University of California regain the respect and trust of the society, but the relatively weak Western State University gradually grew into a first-class research university in the United States. At the same time, it has played an important role in the establishment and development of other public colleges and universities in California, thus establishing and consolidating the leading position of the University of California in the field of public higher education in California. The University of California became a world-class university in a short period of time, and Wheeler's president is inseparable. On the basis of historical tracing and combing, this paper attempts to summarize and generalize President Wheeler's idea of governing the university and the reform practice of the University of California. In order to provide a good reference for the development and reform of universities in China.
