關(guān)于霍桑及他的小說《紅字》的研究成果國內(nèi)外很多。本文擬從另外一個角度：功能文體學（functional stylistics）的角度去分析該作品的主要人物海斯特普林、羅杰齊林渥斯和阿瑟丁姆斯代爾的性格特征。其理論依據(jù)主要是韓禮德功能語言學（Functional linguistics）中的及物性理論（transitivity）和人際功能意義（interpersonal meaning）.通過及物性和人際功能意義的分析,可以發(fā)現(xiàn)海斯特普林的堅強、善良,羅杰齊林渥斯冷酷和邪惡和丁姆斯代爾牧師的軟弱。本文分六個部分,第一部分是概述,簡要介紹功能語言學特別是功能文體學中關(guān)于文體、及物性及人際意義的理論背景。第二部分介紹《紅字》的相關(guān)書評。第三至五部分運用及物性理論、人際功能意義的情態(tài)、意態(tài)隱喻以及語篇元功能分別對三個主要人物進行分析,繼而挖掘其性格特征。第六部分是對全文的總結(jié)。
