[Abstract]:Metaphor is not only a linguistic phenomenon, but also a way of human thinking. The cognition of thinking is closely related to culture. In addition, metaphor greatly affects the construction of our cognitive ability and our understanding of poetry. Therefore, this paper attempts to compare and analyze metaphors in Chinese and English poetry texts from the perspective of culture, and find out the cultural reasons for the similarities and differences in metaphors among them. So as to better understand the use of metaphor in Chinese and English poetry and its cultural commonality and cultural differences. This paper mainly consists of seven parts: introduction introduces the background, reasons and overall framework of this study. The first chapter mainly discusses the literature review related to this paper. This chapter first discusses some important theories in the history of metaphorical research abroad, especially the conceptual metaphorical theory, which is the theoretical basis of this thesis. Secondly, it discusses the current situation of metaphor research in China, the direction and trend of future research, and the domestic and foreign research status of metaphor in poetry, as well as the purpose and significance of this paper. The second chapter mainly discusses the relationship between metaphor and poetry, metaphor and culture, and discusses the definition and classification of metaphor and culture from many aspects. The third chapter makes a systematic comparison of the metaphors in Shakespeare's sonnet and Li Shangyin's Inquisition. First, it introduces Shakespeare and Li Shangyin and their works respectively. Then the similarities and differences of metaphors between the two poets in different target domains are analyzed in detail. The fourth chapter probes into the reasons behind similar and different metaphors in Shakespeare's sonnet poems and Li Shangyin's unthemed poems from the perspective of culture. Through the analysis, it is found that similar metaphors in Shakespeare's sonnets are mainly due to similar body experiences and cognitive structures. Different metaphors are due to the differences in historical background, geographical environment, religion, social customs, literary tradition, philosophical background and so on. The fifth chapter is based on the conclusion that metaphor has cultural commonness and cultural differences. In addition, this study can promote readers to better understand metaphors in poetry and cultural context. The conclusion summarizes the main issues discussed in this paper and the limitations of this study. Based on the theory of conceptual metaphor, this paper analyzes the similarities and differences of metaphors in Shakespeare's sonnet poem and Li Shangyin's unthemed poem, as well as the cultural reasons behind it. The study of this paper helps to promote readers' understanding of the cultural commonness and cultural differences of metaphors.
