[Abstract]:As a branch of minority literature, Chinese American literature has become an indispensable part of American literature. Especially after World War II, with the continuous emergence of a number of writers, their works also pushed Chinese American literature to a peak. Generally speaking, Chinese American literature can be divided into three periods: the end of the 19th century to the 1950s, the 1960s to the 1980s and the 1990s to the present. Racial identity is a very important subject in Chinese American literature. Writers in different periods always try to build the identity of Chinese in their own works. This paper attempts to select three works of different periods, "A Wu", "Chinaman" and "Mona in the Land of Hope". Based on the post-colonial theory and the racial theory, this paper attempts to clarify the characteristics and evolution of racial identity in Chinese American literature. This thesis is divided into five parts. The first part briefly introduces the Chinese American literature, the history of Chinese American immigrants and the theories used. The second part focuses on the formation of ethnic identity in the first period of Chinese literature, from the end of the nineteenth century to the 1950s. At this stage, Chinese suffered a lot of racial discrimination, they are the other in the mainstream society. In order to survive, they have no other choice but to be stereotyped. The third part focuses on the second period of Chinese American literature, the formation of ethnic identity between 1960's and 1980's. Under the influence of the trend of thought in the 1960 s, Chinese people had a strong sense of resistance, and they began to resist the stereotyped identity. They want to build their identity. The fourth part focuses on the formation of ethnic identity of Chinese American literature in the third period from 1990's to present. Deeply influenced by multiculturalism, Chinese people began to realize that ethnic identity is no longer unique and invariable, so they began to construct their own ethnic identity according to their own experience and historical background. The fifth part is the conclusion.
