《幕間》中英格蘭民族性的重現

【摘要】:《幕間》是英國女作家弗吉尼亞·伍爾夫的絕筆之作,該書主要描寫一九三九年六月的一天發(fā)生在英格蘭中部一個歷史悠久的村莊里的故事,其主要情節(jié)由兩條敘事線索構成,其中一條描寫以鄉(xiāng)紳奧利弗家族為代表的村民的日常生活,以典型的伍爾夫式意識流筆法立體展現多個角色的內心世界;另一條描寫當地村民在拉特魯布女士指導下排演露天歷史劇,以戲劇的方式藝術性地再現了英格蘭的民族歷史。兩條敘事主線時而平行,時而交織,描繪出了一幅錯綜復雜的文化圖景。不同于伍爾夫其他作品,《幕間》對于集體和社會有了更加深刻的關注,小說對于個人和群體的描寫都帶有深厚的歷史文化意蘊:同時,《幕間》創(chuàng)新性地運用了小說與戲劇相結合的雜糅體裁,不僅在形式上令人耳目一新,也打破了時空限制,將歷史與現實、藝術與人生有機地結合在一起!赌婚g》中的露天歷史劇演出是整部小說的核心事件,該劇在形式上賦予整個小說文本以結構的工整與嚴謹,同時在主題上提綱掣領,為小說各類主題的集中展現提供了場所。小說中的露天歷史劇其內容取自英格蘭歷史與傳統,以藝術的手法展現了英格蘭民族的歷史面貌;同時,村民們在觀劇過程中的感受與劇情本身形成了有機互動,深化了他們對于作為民族集體的自身的理解,因此,對于英格蘭民族性的探討,成為小說《幕間》的一個重要主題。本文試以戴維·米勒關于民族性的論述為基本理論框架,結合其他相關文獻,探討《幕間》對英格蘭民族性的再現。小說對于英格蘭民族性的再現主要體現于露天歷史劇的劇情,以及村民在對劇情的思考中包含的民族認同感;而米勒認為,民族性首先體現于該民族對于自身的民族認同感,而共同信念與歷史延續(xù)性又構成民族認同的兩個重要方面,因此,本文將以小說中露天歷史劇為出發(fā)點,從共同信念、歷史延續(xù)性以及民族認同感三個層面分析《幕間》中對于民族性的再現。首先,小說中的露天歷史劇通過一系列的舞臺中心形象,象征性地展現了被歷史建構起來的英格蘭民族性,其中君主制、大英帝國和宗教信仰被視為三個核心的共同信念,這些共同信念賦予整個民族以整體的同一性;同時,該劇場幕次序遵循英格蘭民族歷史的發(fā)展軌跡,成功表現出英格蘭民族性在歷史中的延續(xù);而在村民們的觀劇過程中,劇情內容不斷喚起他們對于自身作為整體民族的認同感,劇中所表現的英格蘭民族性在舞臺與觀眾的互動中得到了進一步深化。然而,整個露天歷史劇的演出又暴露出英格蘭民族性本身的建構性,作為民族認同核心的共同信念本質上只是想象性的抽象概念,與該民族自身現實之間存在著無法抹除的差異;而浮現于幕間以及舞臺之外的隱沒歷史及史前景象,又對英格蘭民族的歷史延續(xù)性產生著消解作用;此外,觀劇的村民們對劇情的思考也暴露出英格蘭民族認同內在的不穩(wěn)定性,整個民族的整體同一感受到來自內在的離散趨勢和暴力傾向的威脅。整個演出結束后觀眾的反應與沉思,將該劇對于英格蘭民族性的形象再現升華為對于民族性辯證而深刻的理解,村民們對宗教的象征性回歸體現了他們作為民族群體對于共同身份的訴求;而對于隱沒歷史與史前景象的思考則將英格蘭民族納入整個生命的宏大進程,反映出民族性內在的生命力;最后,村民們對于自身的反思本身展現了對民族性構建的積極參與,也暗含了伍爾夫對于英格蘭民族性的維護立場。
[Abstract]:This book mainly describes the story in a long - standing village in the middle of England in June , nineteen ninety - nine . The main plot consists of two narrative clues , one of which describes the daily life of the villagers represented by the village squire ' s Oliver family , and presents the inner world of a plurality of characters in a typical wood - style stream - of - consciousness writing method .
On the other hand , the local villagers played an open - ended historical drama under the guidance of Ms . Latroub , and reproduced the national history of England in a dramatic fashion .
At the same time , the feelings of the villagers in the process of watching the play have formed an organic interaction with the drama itself and deepened their understanding of the national unity . Therefore , it is an important theme of the novel ' s interlude to explore the national character of England . In this paper , we try to explore the national character of England by David Miller ' s discussion about nationality . The novel is mainly embodied in the drama of the open - air historical drama and the national identity of the villagers in the reflection of the drama .
According to Miller , the national character is embodied in the two important aspects of the nation ' s national identity , and the common belief and the historical continuity constitute the two important aspects of national identity . First , the open - air historical drama in the novel takes the form of a series of stage center images , which symbolically shows the historical construction of the national character of England , in which the monarchy , the British Empire and the religious belief are regarded as the common belief of three core , which give the whole nation the whole identity ;
At the same time , the sequence follows the development track of England ' s national history , which shows the continuation of England ' s national character in history ;
In the process of the villagers ' drama , the content of the drama constantly arouse their sense of identity as a whole nation . The English nationality displayed in the play is further deepened in the interaction of the stage and the audience . However , the performance of the whole open - air historical play reveals the constructiveness of the national character itself , and the common belief as the core of the national identity is merely an abstract concept , and there is a difference between itself and the reality of the nation itself ;
The hidden history and the prehistoric scenery outside the scenes and the stage also have a digestion effect on the historical continuity of the English nation ;
In addition , the writer ' s thinking about the drama also reveals the inherent instability of the nation ' s identity , and the whole nation has the same feeling as a threat from the inherent tendency of the discrete trend and violence . The audience ' s reaction and meditation after the end of the whole show is a deep understanding of the national dialectical . The symbolic return of the villagers to religion reflects their claim to the common identity of the ethnic group .
However , for the reflection of history and prehistory , the nation of England is incorporated into the grand process of the whole life , which reflects the vitality of the national nature ;
In the end , the villagers ' self - reflection itself shows the active participation of the national construction , and also implies the position of Wolff ' s maintenance of the national character of England .
