《八月之光》中人物的“他者性”分析

【摘要】:曾獲諾貝爾文學(xué)獎(jiǎng)的威廉·?思{是美國南方文藝復(fù)興的主要作家之一,1932年發(fā)表的《八月之光》因其獨(dú)特的主題一直備受關(guān)注。對《八月之光》的研究大多涉及其主題和敘事方式,很少有人從后殖民主義理論來分析。 本文借助于愛德華·薩義德《東方學(xué)》中的“他者”理論,從這部作品中三個(gè)主人公在社會(huì)中所遭受的身份缺失和生活經(jīng)歷來集中探討他們的“他者性”。 第一,作為一個(gè)身份不確定的黑白混血兒,喬·克瑞斯莫斯的“他者性”主要表現(xiàn)在他與女人們之間不正常的關(guān)系以及他遠(yuǎn)離社會(huì)生活。社會(huì)無情的壓迫和殘酷的秩序使得他無法確立自己的身份,變成了社會(huì)上最大的“他者”,最終死在了種族主義分子的槍下。 第二,作為北方廢奴主義者的后代,喬安娜·伯頓的家族使命使她沉迷于過去,與社會(huì)無法建立正常關(guān)系,而生活在社會(huì)的邊緣地帶,成為被社會(huì)遺忘的“他者”。再次,作為南方后裔的蓋爾·海托華,沉迷于家族過往,活在對祖父光榮事跡的回憶中,無法在現(xiàn)實(shí)中找到一個(gè)合適的位置,而且他的行為與社會(huì)前進(jìn)的方向相悖,于是他只能成為被社會(huì)遺棄的“他者”。 第三,從社會(huì)和心理兩個(gè)方面入手,本文探討了他們?yōu)楹螣o法找到適合自己位置的根本原因。極端的清教思想中的“命定論”和“原罪說”被種族主義分子利用,并與種族主義結(jié)合組成了一張巨大的無形的網(wǎng)。這張網(wǎng)套住他們,無論怎么掙扎,他們都無法擺脫其束縛。 最后,通過對小說主人公們“他者性”的闡述和分析,本文指出了?思{在小說中表現(xiàn)出來的對種族主義和清教主義對心靈壓迫的譴責(zé),并指出種族主義是毫無客觀依據(jù)的主觀設(shè)想。同時(shí)該小說表現(xiàn)出了?思{對人類的愛和永恒所抱有的希望。
[Abstract]:William Faulkner, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature, is one of the main writers of the American Southern Renaissance. The Light of August, published in 1932, has attracted much attention for its unique theme. The study of Light in August mostly deals with its theme and narrative style, and few people analyze it from the theory of post-colonialism. With the help of the theory of "the other" in Edward said's Orientalism, this paper focuses on the "otherness" of the three protagonists in this work from their lack of identity and life experience in society. First, as an uncertain black and white half-breed, Joe Cretemos'"otherness" is mainly manifested in his abnormal relationship with women and his remoteness from social life. Society's ruthless oppression and cruel order made him unable to establish his identity and became the biggest "other" in society, and eventually died under the gun of the racists. Second, as a descendant of Northern abolitionists, Joana Burton's family mission led her to indulge in the past, unable to establish a normal relationship with society, and to live on the fringes of society and become the "other" forgotten by society. Again, as a Southern descendant, Gael Haithohua, indulging in the family past, living in the memory of his grandfather's glorious deeds, could not find a proper place in reality, and his behavior was contrary to the direction in which society moved forward. As a result, he can only become the "other" abandoned by society. Third, from the social and psychological aspects, this paper discusses why they can not find their own position. The extreme puritanism of "destiny" and "doctrine of original sin" were exploited by racist elements and combined with racism to form a huge invisible network. The net caught them, and no matter how they struggled, they could not free themselves from their bondage. Finally, this paper points out Faulkner's condemnation of racism and Puritanism to the oppression of the soul through the analysis of the "otherness" of the protagonists in the novel. It also points out that racism is a subjective assumption with no objective basis. At the same time, the novel shows Faulkner's love for mankind and eternal hope.
