[Abstract]:As a novelist and poet, Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) enjoys a high reputation in the English literary world as well as in the world. Of all his novels, what really made him famous in the world was his novel "character and Environment" written in the context of Wessex. "Mayor of Casterbridge" is one of them. The novel has been the subject of attention since its inception for its amazing and brilliant plot and ingenious ideas. As one of the representative figures of the feminist movement, Bovova, in her classic book "second Sex", analyzes in detail the different destinies of women in different situations. She thinks that women are not born. It is education and social customs that force women to hide their transcendence, to show their immanence and to be the absolute other. She believes that the only way for women to be liberated is to stand out in extreme loneliness, admit their subjectivity and show transcendence. This paper makes an in-depth analysis of the three female characters in Mayor Casterbridge by using Bovova's feminist theory, and probes into the position of women in the patriarchal society and their pursuit of freedom. In order to understand Hardy's view of women in this novel. Through analysis, we can know that Hardy is very concerned about the fate of women. He believes that traditional women, because of their femininity, are destined to end in tragedy in patriarchal society. For the new women who have already realized, they must stand firm and not wander in the subjectivity and otherness, because this will only accelerate the arrival of her tragic destiny. He believes that if women want equality and freedom, they must be independent economically and ideologically, that is, they must realize the importance of their own existence, and correctly understand themselves and show transcendence. This paper analyzes in detail the female roles in the Mayor of Casterbridge, discusses the situation and fate of three different types of women in the patriarchal society, and reveals the methods of women's liberation. Different from previous studies, this paper focuses on the female characters in the novel, which provides a novel perspective for the study of the novel.
