構式是形式和意義的配對體,其中“意義”方面不僅僅是語義特征,還包括語篇功能和語用功能。英語動名詞構式由動詞加-ing后綴名化而來,兼有動詞和名詞的句法特征,在句子中的語法功能與名詞類同。英語動名詞構式的功能研究主要集中在其指稱性上。指稱是語言的基本功能之一,用來把說話人、聽話人和談到的實體（物質的或精神的）聯系起來。語言上的指稱手段研究多與人稱性和指示性代詞、名詞短語或專有名稱相關。在情境植入理論視角下,指稱語的涵蓋范圍擴大,經過情境植入的名詞短語和限定小句都是指稱語。動名詞構式作為一種動詞名化現象,會混合采用名詞情境植入機制和動詞情境植入機制,因此是一種經過情境植入的非限定小句表現形式,也是指稱語,在語篇中具有指稱功能,指稱某個事件或情景。構式具有多義性,根據形式的變換（或因為采用不同的情境植入成分）,動名詞構式分為名性、動性兩類,其指稱功能也隨之具有多變性。動名詞構式的指稱功能采取“通名”策略（同名詞短語一樣）,主要表現為有定性、特指性和虛擬性。但是,由于有定性和特指性的概念界定不一,并且通過控制關系而獲得邏輯主語的動性動名詞被等同于帶有領屬語的名詞短語結構,導致兩類動名詞構式在有...
