　　長 沙劉社愛攝ChangshQ長沙(C hangsha)中國湖南省會，歷史文化名城，軍事重鎮(zhèn)。位于湖南省東部，湘江下游。轄東、西、南、北、郊5區(qū)和長沙、望城、寧鄉(xiāng)3縣。面積6 810平方千米，人口423.64萬，其中市區(qū)面積367平方千米，人口138.71萬(1993)。 春秋戰(zhàn)國為楚城邑。秦為長沙郡。西漢為長沙國都。東漢復為長沙郡。三國吳分民沙郡為湘東、湘西兩郡。晉永嘉元年(307)復設長沙郡，并置湘州。隋開皇九年(589)撤湘州，改長沙郡為潭州，大業(yè)三年(607)復稱民沙郡。唐初復為潭州。五代為楚國都，改潭州為長沙府。元為潭州路，后改為天臨路。明復稱長沙府。清康熙三年(1664)置湖南布政使司，為湖南省治。1933年設長沙市。1949年為省轄市。 地處湘東丘陵盆地區(qū)，地勢南高北低。西依雪峰山，東靠連云山、羅霄山。市區(qū)海拔44米，西部是岳麓山、鳳凰山、天馬山等低山丘陵，其中岳麓山海拔295.4米，為市區(qū)制高點。東部有阿彌嶺、楊家?guī)X等一系列低崗，南部透遁著大片紅色崗地，有金盆嶺、黃土嶺、東瓜山、妙高山、回龍山為屏障。北部是開闊的沖積平原。湘江由南向北縱貫市區(qū)，注人洞庭湖，枯水期水深1一15米，其西岸的靳江、偽水與東岸的瀏陽河、撈刀河均為其支流，洪水期4-7月。屬北亞熱帶濕潤季風氣候。年平均氣溫172℃，1月平均氣溫4.7℃，7月平均氣溫29.4℃。年平均降水量1 412毫米。礦產有硅砂、石灰石、煤、磷礦石、鐵礦石等。長沙為湖南省重要的工業(yè)基地。以機械、化工、食品、紡織等工業(yè)為主。湘繡是中國四大名繡之一。農副業(yè)產品以水稻、生豬、鮮魚_為主，盛產茶葉、柑桔、油菜籽等。是全省交通樞紐。北京一廣州鐵路縱貫，石門一長沙鐵路正在建設中。公路干線通江西、湖北、四川、貴州、廣東等省。湘江長沙港有泊位102個，長沙以下常年可航300噸船舶，長沙一株洲段常年可航15一300噸船舶。其支流中下游均可通航10~20噸船舶。湘江上建有兩座公路大橋。民航通北京、上海、廣州、成都、武漢、西安等城市。
