馬修·阿諾德是英國維多利亞時期的一位重要人物。他對自己的社會尤其對中產(chǎn)階級庸俗主義進行了深刻地批評。他的批評引起了許多學(xué)者的關(guān)注。學(xué)者們對阿諾德關(guān)于庸俗主義的批評高度關(guān)注的同時,他們的意見并不統(tǒng)一。有學(xué)者認為阿諾德關(guān)于庸俗主義的批評對英國文化起著消極的作用,而其他學(xué)者并不這么認為。那么我們應(yīng)該如何評價阿諾德的這種批評對英國文化的影響呢?是積極還是消極的呢?通過對相關(guān)文獻的研究,本文作者認為阿諾德關(guān)于中產(chǎn)階級庸俗主義的批評起著積極而非消極的影響。這種影響從三個方面可以看出。首先,阿諾德關(guān)于庸俗主義的批評對英國文化的積極影響反映在他對希伯來主義價值觀的批評。阿諾德認為希伯來主義重“行”而輕“知”,而中產(chǎn)階級又把對政治和生意的興趣作為他們“行”的重要途徑。阿諾德對中產(chǎn)階級的這種行為進行了批評。他的批評對英國文化在兩方面產(chǎn)生了積極的影響。一是他的批評改變了人們對經(jīng)濟政策尤其是自由放任的看法;二是他的批評使經(jīng)典問題在十九世紀和二十世紀明顯地凸顯出來。其次,阿諾德關(guān)于庸俗主義的批評對英國文化的積極影響反映在他對中產(chǎn)階級自身教育滿足感的批評。阿諾德認為雖然十九世紀的中產(chǎn)階級教育狀況很糟糕,但他們卻對...
