尤金·奧尼爾（1888-1953）是美國二十世紀(jì)重要的劇作家之一，其作品因“富有生命力，誠摯，感情強烈，有原始悲劇的烙印”（諾貝爾授獎詞語）而榮獲1936年度諾貝爾文學(xué)獎，奧尼爾本人也因此被稱為“美國戲劇之父”。1956年，隨著《送冰的人來了》和《長夜漫漫路迢迢》上演的大獲成功，奧尼爾重新復(fù)活，他的幾十部作品也都被重新研究。20世紀(jì)80年代始，中國的外國文學(xué)界關(guān)于奧尼爾的作品研究開始嶄露頭角并日漸形成一種氣候。這當(dāng)中奧尼爾1924年創(chuàng)作的《榆樹下的欲望》一直被認(rèn)為是其創(chuàng)作生涯中最優(yōu)秀的作品之一。筆者在大量閱讀相關(guān)評論及傳記的基礎(chǔ)上，對此提出質(zhì)疑：“欲望”真的如此優(yōu)秀和值得肯定嗎? 本文分五章，第一章是序言，作者在這里首先指出，外國的文學(xué)評論界對奧尼爾的這部作品有正反兩方面的評價，盡管贊成者居多。從20世紀(jì)80年代起在中國興起的奧尼爾研究看，評論界對“欲望”幾乎是一致的贊成、肯定，特別肯定其“對人性中貪婪本質(zhì)進(jìn)行深刻的揭露，具有深刻的意義�！泵鎸W氏的《榆樹下的欲望》，不同的聲音引發(fā)筆者從悲劇的角度重新審視這部作品，并同其后期創(chuàng)作的《長夜漫漫路迢迢》加以比較，以說明“欲望”的不足之...
