[Abstract]:The emergence of Internet not only brought about the revolution of information technology, but also brought great impact to culture and language. With the continuous development of the Internet, network neologisms are born. In China, since Weng'an incident in 2008, Internet neologisms have become an important means of public opinion. With the continuous expansion of its influence, these new words gradually attracted the attention of all walks of life. The development of language is closely related to its political, economic and social background. However, in recent years, the study of network neologisms has been limited to linguistic ontology and seldom interpreted from a macro perspective. At the same time, existing research has suggested that such as "why 'hide and seek' push-ups' can become a popular online word?" "how do these new words come to be accepted by an increasing number of audiences?" The key issues closely related to rhetoric are seldom explained. In view of these considerations, this paper attempts to examine and interpret online neologisms from the perspective of western rhetoric in order to deepen our understanding of this new linguistic phenomenon. Western rhetoric, as a practice of influencing people's thoughts, feelings, attitudes and behaviors through symbolic means, plays an important role in the emergence and popularity of new words on the Internet. This paper mainly studies the mechanism of the generation and circulation of network neologisms from the perspective of western rhetoric, and puts forward how to treat the phenomenon of network neologisms correctly from the perspective of western rhetoric's understanding of the social functions of language. The wide spread of network neologisms not only helps the public to obtain more right of speech and social participation, but also promotes the reasonable solution of many social events concerned by the public. Therefore, it is necessary for us to look at the new words in a more positive manner.
