【摘要】：《小說月報(bào)》是清末民初的一份小說雜志,隸屬于商務(wù)印書館。本文由此出 發(fā),研究它和近代上海都市化的關(guān)系。這里有兩個(gè)層面的含義:一是小說雜志和 上海城市文化的關(guān)系,二是小說和上海城市文化的關(guān)系。如果從廣義的文化概念 上看,創(chuàng)刊于上海的《小說月報(bào)》和以上海為背景的小說,實(shí)則是上海城市文化 的一個(gè)組成部分。本文把它們作為一個(gè)獨(dú)立的個(gè)體來考察,除了兩者本身具有鮮 明的特點(diǎn)之外,它們也是近代上海文化特征的有力反映,具有一定的典型性。因 此,本文運(yùn)用小說雜志、小說和上海城市文化互證的方法,力圖揭示以《小說月 報(bào)》為代表的大眾傳媒業(yè)和以上海為故事背景的小說的發(fā)展,與上海城市文化繁 榮間互動(dòng)的某種規(guī)律性。 一、小說雜志與上海城市文化。論題從分析《小說月報(bào)》的基本狀況入手, 著重介紹了雜志的編輯理念、兩任編輯以及作家群。雜志又與印刷出版業(yè)緊密相 連,考察《小說月報(bào)》就不能不關(guān)系到商務(wù)印書館。商務(wù)的思想傾向直接影響著 《小說月報(bào)》。以商務(wù)為首的上海出版業(yè)的繁榮,成為當(dāng)時(shí)國民素質(zhì)提高的標(biāo)志。 因?yàn)?印刷出版業(yè)的繁榮不僅僅表現(xiàn)為印刷技術(shù)上的提高,大眾傳媒業(yè)的發(fā)展, 更帶來了文化的變革,思想觀念的革新,有力地促進(jìn)了城市文化的繁榮。而上海 城市文化的繁榮也催化了印刷出版業(yè)的發(fā)達(dá)。 從小說雜志的外部各要素來看,雜志與作家、書局以及與讀者、文化間存在 著某種互動(dòng)的關(guān)系。小說雜志依賴作家的優(yōu)秀作品,需要優(yōu)秀的作家來編輯雜志, 當(dāng)然,它也為作家提供了發(fā)表作品的園地,提供了作家賴以生存的稿費(fèi)。它也需 要書局的經(jīng)濟(jì)支持,為書局盈利或者是提供免費(fèi)的廣告,也傳達(dá)了書局的思想傾 向。作家和書局也是以利益為基礎(chǔ)的相互利用。小說雜志需要讀者,在市場化的 條件下,讀者的趣味往往決定著雜志的作品的審美取向,小說雜志的品位也在影 響著讀者的個(gè)體素質(zhì)。雜志的發(fā)達(dá)常常是文化繁榮的表征,也就是說,文化的繁 榮必將以大眾傳媒作為外在的表現(xiàn)形式。讀者與文化之間也是互為條件的。 二、小說與上海城市文化。論題以小說作為論述的重點(diǎn),其中以商業(yè)性、娛 樂性、大眾化和新聞紀(jì)實(shí)為特點(diǎn)的都市小說,在愉悅市民大眾的同時(shí),也反映并 影響著上海城市文化。反之,近代上海城市文化有著自己的特色和雅俗整合的理 想追求,它對市民們物質(zhì)、精神的濡染無處不在,當(dāng)然也影響著都市小說,因?yàn)?都市小說本身就是城市文化的產(chǎn)物。 此時(shí),小說和上海城市文化在歐風(fēng)美雨的洗禮中,加快了自己的現(xiàn)代化腳步。 上海城市文化通過物質(zhì)、制度和精神三個(gè)層面展現(xiàn)了現(xiàn)代化的特色。這些也正是 小說所積極反映的。不僅如此,小說還呈現(xiàn)了它藝術(shù)層面上的現(xiàn)代化,如小說敘 事模式的突破等。 小說中滲透著文化意識,而且通過不同的角度,不同的上海故事背景,積極 地反映著上海城市文化和許多熱點(diǎn)問題,如西方自由、民主、平等的思想,婦女 解放、婚姻自主等觀念,小說作品中都有相應(yīng)的反映,并對這些思想進(jìn)行了積極 的反思。小說還通過“士農(nóng)工商”四個(gè)階層人物形象的塑造,揭示了他們的文化內(nèi) 涵,也思考著清末民初小說人物形象塑造中的不足。
