英語是一種歷史悠久的世界語言,經(jīng)歷了漫長的演變過程,它的發(fā)展大致可以分為四個階段:“古英語”（449-1066）、“中世紀英語”（1066-1489）、“早期現(xiàn)代英語”（1489-1801）和“現(xiàn)代英語”（1801至今）。其中,以杰弗里·喬叟（1328-1400）的出生為界,中世紀英語又分為早期中世紀英語和晚期中世紀英語。公元1066年諾曼人征服英國,其后的二百多年,英語發(fā)生了巨大變化。喬叟作為英國中世紀時期的代表性作家,是第一位使用英語創(chuàng)作的宮廷作家,其作品對現(xiàn)代英語的形成有著巨大貢獻,其中,《坎特伯雷故事集》更堪稱文學(xué)體裁的瑰寶。在同時代的主要英國文學(xué)家中,喬叟受外來影響無疑最為廣泛。喬叟在他的作品中運用了大量的外來詞,其中,法語外來詞居首。中世紀時期,英法交流頻繁,一些法語詞匯逐漸進入英語,故而英語中含有大量的法語“特征”,這些特征被成功地“英化”。從英國文學(xué)發(fā)展史的角度來看,喬叟最具有“英國性”,被尊為“英國詩歌之父”。他是偉大的翻譯家,高尚的詩人,其作品文筆清晰,語言準確,不僅為不懂法語的人開辟了一個文學(xué)大花園,更為英國帶來了光明。因此,他所使用的英語詞匯,必然對中世紀時期英...
