[Abstract]:This paper puts Ding Weiliang's translation activities back under the background of the power relationship between China and the West in modern times, and takes the world "civilization hierarchy" order formulated by the western colonial forces in the 19th century as a reference, and points out that the fundamental purpose of Ding Weiliang's English translation of Chinese myths and legends and poems is to disseminate the orientation and image of Chinese "semi-civilization" to the western society in order to safeguard the colonial and missionary interests of the West in China. In order to achieve this goal, Ding Weiliang deliberately screened the subject matter of translation, and systematically manipulated and rewritten the Chinese original works in the process of translation. As the first American sinologist to concentrate on the translation of Chinese myths and legends and poems into English, Ding Weiliang contributed objectively to the spread of Chinese literature in the United States.
