    中國(guó)西南地區(qū)大河之一。上源扎曲源出青海省雜多縣境唐古拉山北麓查加日瑪?shù)奈鱾?cè)，南流在西藏自治區(qū)昌都縣附近與昂曲匯合后稱(chēng)瀾滄江，向東南流入云南西部至西雙版納傣族自治州南部，流出國(guó)境稱(chēng)湄公河，經(jīng)緬甸、老撾、泰國(guó)、柬埔寨，在越南南部入南海。河長(zhǎng)2153千米，流域面積16.4萬(wàn)平方千米，占瀾滄江-湄公河流域面積的22.5％。支流眾多，較大支流有沘江、漾濞江、威遠(yuǎn)江、補(bǔ)遠(yuǎn)江等。上中游河道從青藏高原穿行在橫斷山脈間，河流深切，形成兩岸高山對(duì)峙，坡陡險(xiǎn)峻V形峽谷。下游沿河多河谷平壩，著名的景洪壩、橄欖壩各長(zhǎng)8千米，已初步擬定在干流上興建24級(jí)梯級(jí)電站。河道中險(xiǎn)灘急流較多。徑流資源豐富，多年平均徑流量740億立方米。水力資源理論蘊(yùn)藏量3656萬(wàn)千瓦，可能開(kāi)發(fā)量約2348萬(wàn)千瓦，干流為2088萬(wàn)千瓦，約占全流域89％。河道中因險(xiǎn)灘急流較多，只有威遠(yuǎn)江口至橄欖壩段可行木船和機(jī)動(dòng)船。1990年中、老兩國(guó)進(jìn)行了洪水期考察，試航萬(wàn)象取得成功。1993年新組建的思茅航運(yùn)公司，開(kāi)始為老撾、緬甸、泰國(guó)運(yùn)送產(chǎn)品3000多噸。同年，中、老、緬、泰4國(guó)經(jīng)過(guò)協(xié)商，對(duì)該河段提出共同整治方案。
