委婉語是指人們在談論某事時發(fā)現(xiàn)別人感到不快或局促不安時所使用的禮貌的詞或表達方式。它起源于人類文明早期對語言的崇拜，并發(fā)展成為協(xié)調(diào)人際關(guān)系的一種重要手段。從古至今，尤其是近幾十年來，許多不同背景的學者從不同的視角對委婉語的語義特征以及語用和社會功能做了廣泛而細致的研究。雖然他們的研究成果對日后該領(lǐng)域的研究具有極大地啟發(fā)性，卻沒有能夠從一種綜合的角度展現(xiàn)委婉語三個平面即語義、語用和語法的內(nèi)在關(guān)系。因此，作者認為對委婉語進行綜合視角的研究是必要的而且可行的。本文依據(jù)三個平面理論，采用對比和歷史的方法對幾種語言，特別是英語和漢語中大量的委婉語進行三維視角研究，在委婉語的語義特征、語用功能和語法形式等方面取得了一些重要的發(fā)現(xiàn)。在語義方面，研究發(fā)現(xiàn)委婉語的語義體現(xiàn)出模糊性，升格及降格等特征，并包括內(nèi)涵義、社會義、感情義和搭配義。然而，委婉語的意義不是靜止不變的，在不同的語境中，委婉語可用來發(fā)揮回避功能、禮貌功能、掩蓋事實功能及優(yōu)雅功能。進一步的考察顯示委婉語的語法形式不是單質(zhì)的，相反，言語者可使用不同的語法方式來構(gòu)造委婉語。文章還對近年來漢語中出現(xiàn)的一類新委婉結(jié)構(gòu)進行了個案研究，這些委婉結(jié)構(gòu)來源...
