索爾·貝婁是美國戰(zhàn)后文學(xué)史上繼海明威和福克納之后最著名的作家之一。本文通過對其第五部小說《雨王漢德森》的文本分析來探討貝婁與十九世紀(jì)美國超驗主義傳統(tǒng)特別是與其代表人物愛默生超驗主義思想之間的關(guān)系。超驗主義崇尚精神,蔑視物質(zhì),認(rèn)為自然和精神存在著對應(yīng)關(guān)系,主張人回到大自然中去尋找生活的意義。同時,超驗主義也是美國文化中重要元素個人主義的源頭,愛默生強調(diào)個人就是世界,世界為個人而存在,個人可以完全憑借自己的力量獲得精神的完美。與愛默生超驗主義理論的基本主張相聯(lián)系,本文討論從三個方面展開。第一個方面:文本展現(xiàn)的貝婁的自然觀是超驗主義的自然觀。小說主人公漢德森在美國混亂的生活是其遠(yuǎn)離自然的結(jié)果,而在他追求精神新生的過程中,象征大自然的非洲這一意象發(fā)揮了重要作用。正是在身外自然的啟發(fā)和引導(dǎo)下,漢德森才徹底擺脫了現(xiàn)代社會的混亂和困擾,從而獲得了身心的和諧。第二個方面:在此文本中,貝婁對精神的強調(diào)與愛默生超驗主義思想一脈相承。漢德森的出走是為了避免自己的精神在充滿物欲的美國慢慢死掉,而他的回歸正是因為自己的精神獲得了重生。第三個方面:盡管貝婁和愛默生一樣強調(diào)和注重個人存在與個人價值,但他在這部作品中...
