出現(xiàn)于18世紀末，19世紀初的哥特文學(xué)風(fēng)格，是浪漫主義中的一支。它的出現(xiàn)與當時的工業(yè)革命背景及其導(dǎo)致的一系列社會變化和波動有著重要的聯(lián)系。此類小說中擅長描寫超自然現(xiàn)象，以及使用恐怖和離奇怪誕的寫作風(fēng)格來描述善惡之間的爭斗，因此又被稱作黑色浪漫主義。在哥特小說短短數(shù)十年的風(fēng)潮過去后，眾多西方小說家受到其風(fēng)格的影響。而至今日，這種黑色風(fēng)格隨著以《指環(huán)王》為代表的眾多魔幻和科幻題材電影的面世而再度風(fēng)行起來。通過對小說原著作者托爾金的生活背景，以及小說的創(chuàng)作背景和小說中情節(jié)和人物的分析，可以看出指環(huán)王系列小說的創(chuàng)作背景與哥特小說的背景有明顯的相似處，而小說本身也受到傳統(tǒng)哥特風(fēng)格的影響，并且在這個風(fēng)格框架下，小說繼續(xù)體現(xiàn)了典型的哥特小說中的宗教問題和對現(xiàn)代技術(shù)的恐懼。由此得出結(jié)論，在技術(shù)發(fā)展導(dǎo)致理性思維占據(jù)主要地位的同時，非理性思維的發(fā)展也在同時進行，而且這種發(fā)展是不可忽視的。
