美國作家亨利·詹姆斯(1843—1916)被譽為心理現(xiàn)實主義大師。與傳統(tǒng)小說家通過描述人物行動來塑造人物的做法相比，詹姆斯更欣賞通過刻畫人物心理塑造典型人物的手法。其早期代表作《一位女士的畫像》就是對女主人公伊莎貝爾·阿切爾內(nèi)心世界進行探索的典范作品。本文旨在分析詹姆斯在《一位女士的畫像》中內(nèi)聚焦的敘述技巧的應用方式和效果，并應用敘事學理論中的內(nèi)聚焦理論及結合外部現(xiàn)實分析伊莎貝爾的心理發(fā)展過程。本文認為伊莎貝爾獨特的自由觀的核心是自我的完整性，及以此為目的的消極性自由階段和積極性自由階段。而在這兩個追求自由的階段伊莎貝爾并沒有真正實現(xiàn)自我，不幸的婚姻生活使伊莎貝爾意識世界逐漸成熟起來，認識了自己的真實處境，加深了對現(xiàn)實生活本身的理解，并最終將自我定位到原有的婚姻生活中。
