新歷史主義視野中的《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》

【摘要】:《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》被公認(rèn)為喬治·艾略特早期最優(yōu)秀的作品之一,同時(shí)也是一部半自傳體小說(shuō)。小說(shuō)一經(jīng)出版,就被諸多評(píng)論家津津樂道。艾略特基于自己的家鄉(xiāng)生活及其成長(zhǎng)經(jīng)歷塑造其小說(shuō)的主人公麥琪。諸如麥琪的童年軼事,其青少年時(shí)期的痛苦迷茫,與哥哥的兄妹之情以及她不被理解的愛情等,皆是艾略特記憶碎片的重新組合。正如作者本人一樣,麥琪以其叛逆的行為被家庭和社會(huì)所放逐;因其奉行狹隘的道德觀,她總是處在痛苦的深淵,因此人們往往稱她是一個(gè)殉難者。然而作品結(jié)尾所隱藏的潛在的顛覆力量卻往往被人們忽視。 本文試從新歷史主義的角度去重新解讀《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》。艾略特在《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》中記錄了大量的邊緣話語(yǔ)。本文通過(guò)艾略特記錄的邊緣話語(yǔ)和其本人的反傳統(tǒng)經(jīng)歷,闡釋了麥琪對(duì)主流意識(shí)和社會(huì)權(quán)威的挑戰(zhàn)。并且基于格林布拉特的顛覆抑制說(shuō)和福柯的權(quán)力說(shuō),分析了麥琪是如何受到抑制的。正是在顛覆和抑制的此消彼長(zhǎng)中,產(chǎn)生了權(quán)力。正如福柯所言,權(quán)力產(chǎn)生顛覆并為抑制服務(wù)。 本論文分為五部分:第一章即前言,介紹艾略特的早期小說(shuō)和《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》的國(guó)內(nèi)外研究現(xiàn)狀,并簡(jiǎn)單介紹了格林布拉特的顛覆抑制論和?碌臋(quán)力說(shuō)。第二章探析作品中書寫的“小歷史”和記錄的邊緣話語(yǔ),并介紹艾略特的人文主義與新歷史主義的契合點(diǎn)。第三章介紹《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》中的女主人公麥琪在不同的年紀(jì)階段所表現(xiàn)出來(lái)的顛覆社會(huì)主流和權(quán)威的力量,尤其是她對(duì)“家庭天使”意象的顛覆。第四章分析麥琪在其童年、青少年以及成年后的顛覆力量是如何被抑制的。結(jié)論部分指出《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》以麥琪的邊緣人的聲音記錄小歷史。盡管她在追求自己的理想時(shí)經(jīng)歷了艱難的抗?fàn),但最終她的顛覆力量都受到了抑制并且?guī)?lái)了權(quán)力的實(shí)現(xiàn)。 筆者認(rèn)為用新歷史主義解讀《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》也有其不足的一面,因?yàn)樾職v史主義者往往強(qiáng)調(diào)抑制的最終作用。但當(dāng)洪水來(lái)臨之際,,麥琪作為一個(gè)被家庭和社會(huì)拋棄的弱女子劃船去拯救權(quán)威的象征者湯姆,麥琪的這一舉動(dòng)是其長(zhǎng)期壓抑后的爆發(fā),她的死并不代表她受到了徹底的抑制。然而新歷史主義者往往忽視麥琪身上所體現(xiàn)的這種潛在的顛覆力。
[Abstract]:The Mill on the Frost River is recognized as one of George Eliot's early best works and a semi-autobiographical novel. As soon as the novel was published, it was relished by many critics. Eliot shaped Maggie, the protagonist of his novel, based on his hometown life and his growing-up experience. Anecdotes about Maggie's childhood, the agony of her adolescence, the love of her brother and sister, and her ununderstood love are all pieces of Eliot's memory. Like the author herself, Maggie was exiled by her family and society for her rebellious behaviour; because of her narrow morality, she was always in the abyss of pain, so she was often called a martyr. However, the potential subversive forces hidden at the end of the work are often ignored. This paper attempts to re-interpret the Mill on the Flos River from the perspective of neo-historicism. Eliot recorded a great deal of marginal discourse in the Mill on the Flos River. Through the marginal discourse recorded by Eliot and his anti-traditional experiences, this paper explains Maggie's challenge to mainstream consciousness and social authority. Based on Greenblatt's subversion suppression theory and Foucault's power theory, this paper analyzes how Maggie was suppressed. It was in the vicissitudes of subversion and suppression that power emerged. As Foucault says, power subverts and serves repression. This thesis is divided into five parts: the first chapter, preface, introduces Eliot's early novels and the research status of Mill on the Flos, and briefly introduces Greenblatt's suppressionism of subversion and Foucault's power theory, and gives a brief introduction to Greenblatt's theory of suppression of subversion and Foucault's theory of power. The second chapter explores the "small history" written in the works and the recorded marginal discourse, and introduces Eliot's humanism and the concordance of the new historicism. The third chapter introduces Maggie's power to subvert the mainstream and authority of society at different ages, especially her subversion of the image of "Family Angel" in the Mills on the Flos River. Chapter four analyzes how Maggie's subversive forces were suppressed in her childhood, adolescence and adulthood. The conclusion points out that the Mill on the Flos River records a small history with the voices of Maggie's marginal people. Despite her hard struggle to pursue her ideals, her subversive forces were suppressed and power was realized. The author believes that the interpretation of the Mill on the Flos River by New historicism also has its shortcomings, because the New historicists tend to emphasize the ultimate role of inhibition. But when the flood came, Maggie rowed to save the authority of Tom, a weak woman abandoned by her family and society, and her death did not mean she was completely repressed. New historicists, however, tend to overlook Maggie's potential subversive power.
