【摘要】：作為德萊塞的第一部作品,《嘉莉妹妹》是美國文學史上的一一座重要里程碑。盡管最初曾因其“不道德”內(nèi)容而被出版社拒絕出版,這部作品恰恰還是由于其對十九世紀工業(yè)化和城市化的美國社會的現(xiàn)實主義描繪而聞名。德萊塞通過講述農(nóng)村少女嘉莉妹妹如何從社會底層躋身紐約城百老匯舞臺的經(jīng)歷,成功繪就一幅十九世紀美國社會的時代畫卷。 本文創(chuàng)新之處在于論文采取文化研究的切入角度,把對小說的分析與特殊的時代背景結(jié)合,借助凡勃倫的“炫耀性消費”概念及布迪厄?qū)Α拔幕Y本”的分析,對《嘉莉妹妹》中所體現(xiàn)的有閑階級的生活方式進行文化剖析。在十九世紀晚期美國的工業(yè)化社會,嘉莉妹妹的所代表的底層人民與上層有閑階級在當時社會背景下有著懸殊的社會地位和截然不同的生活方式。從經(jīng)濟角度來看,嘉莉妹妹對物質(zhì)的追求,本質(zhì)上是其試圖通過炫耀性消費來模仿有閑階級的生活方式以彌合這種懸殊的階級差距。然而,嘉莉妹妹對金錢的膚淺認識、文化趣味的低下以及教育的不足體現(xiàn)了其在文化資本上的缺乏,這種缺乏導致出身于下層社會的她終究無法跨越有閑階級用文化資本建立起來的無形的階級障礙。 本文主要采取文本分析的方式,聚集于有閑階級特征在《嘉莉妹妹》一書中的具體體現(xiàn),試圖對其經(jīng)濟和文化兩方面作一初步的窺探。本論文最終得出的結(jié)論是：《嘉莉妹妹》一書作為反映歷史現(xiàn)實的文本,充分體現(xiàn)了在十九世紀美國社會,有閑階級如何憑借經(jīng)濟和文化上的優(yōu)勢所建立的區(qū)隔于其它階級的生活方式,這種區(qū)隔正是嘉莉妹妹在小說結(jié)尾迷惑和失落的根源。本文的分析有利于我們更好地結(jié)合社會歷史背景了解小說中主人公們的行為及動機,加深我們對這部小說的理解。
[Abstract]:As Dreiser's first work, Sister Carrie is an important milestone in the history of American literature. Although it was initially rejected by publishers for its "immoral" content, the work is best known for its realistic portrayal of the industrialised and urbanised American society of the nineteenth century. Dreiser succeeded in drawing a 19th-century American era by telling how Sister Carrie, a rural girl, rose from the bottom of society to the Broadway stage in New York City. The innovation of this paper is that the thesis adopts the angle of cultural research, combines the analysis of the novel with the special background of the times, with the help of Veblen's concept of "conspicuous consumption" and Bourdieu's analysis of "cultural capital". A cultural analysis of the life style of the idle class embodied in Sister Carrie. In the industrialized society of America in the late 19th century, the lower class represented by sister Carrie and the upper class had different social status and different way of life in the social background of that time. From the economic point of view, sister Carrie's pursuit of material is essentially an attempt to bridge this gap by imitating the lifestyle of the idle class through conspicuous consumption. However, sister Carrie's superficial understanding of money, her low cultural interest and her lack of education reflected her lack of cultural capital. This lack led her from the lower class to eventually overcome the invisible class barriers built up by the idle class with its cultural capital. This paper mainly adopts the way of text analysis, and concentrates on the concrete embodiment of the characteristics of idle class in Sister Carrie, trying to make a preliminary exploration of its economy and culture. The final conclusion of this thesis is that Sister Carrie, as a text reflecting historical reality, fully reflects American society in the nineteenth century. How the idle class, by virtue of its economic and cultural superiority, distinguishes itself from the way of life of other classes, is the root of sister Carrie's confusion and loss at the end of the novel. The analysis of this paper is helpful for us to better understand the behavior and motivation of the protagonists in the novel, and to deepen our understanding of the novel.
