[Abstract]:As a kind of popular literature or popular literature, Gothic novels have always had a more or less influence on most literary creation with their unique Gothic tradition in the history of literature. Many first-rate Western writers either directly tell Gothic stories or indirectly use Gothic techniques in their own creation, which has led Gothic novels to enter the mainstream of literary development from the marginal position of popular novels in the field of literature. Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775-1818) is one of the representative writers of British Gothic novels. He wrote Monk (1796) at the age of 19. It has become one of the most acclaimed and controversial British Gothic novels. As a classic Gothic novel, the Monk not only has the obvious Gothic characteristics but also inherits the characteristics of the corresponding biblical elements in the aspects of the portrayal of characters, the arrangement of image and narrative structure, etc. To some extent, we can find that the Bible has a profound influence on the Gothic novel the Monk. As a great literary work, the Bible occupies an important position in the history of world literature. It has a profound influence on western culture and is an encyclopedia of the Western world. In every literary work in the West, we can find the shadow of the Bible. Therefore, it is recognized in the literary world that it is necessary to analyze a Western literary work by using the relevant knowledge of the Bible. This paper applies Northrop Frey's archetypal criticism theory of Canada famous critic Northrop Fry to analyze the Monk from the aspects of characters image and structure so that readers can understand the deep meaning of the novel from the perspective of archetype. The purpose of this paper is to explore the biblical archetypes in the novel so as to help readers better understand Lewis' creative ideas, which is the innovation of this thesis. In addition, according to the analysis of the thesis, we can find that in the Gothic novel the Monk, the characters, images and structures inherit the characteristics of the corresponding elements in the Bible. According to the analysis, we can also feel Lewis's serious thinking about human nature and society as a novelist.
