納撒尼爾·霍桑被譽為美國19世紀最偉大的浪漫主義小說家,其小說《紅字》于1850年首次出版,因其超越傳統(tǒng)小說風格所帶來的社會影響力和獨具匠心的敘述技巧使該作品在西方文壇的地位愈久彌新,西方眾多學者和評論家對其研究源源不竭。但在國內(nèi),直到十九世紀三十年代才出現(xiàn)第一個《紅字》中譯本。國內(nèi)對《紅字》的翻譯研究大多停留在語言學、詩學、功能對等和目的論等方面。也有少部分論文、期刊曾探討過《紅字》的敘事特點,但從敘事學角度探討《紅字》中譯本的文章卻屈指可數(shù)。敘事學是一門年輕卻影響深遠的學科。通常,國內(nèi)將敘事學理論運用于文學作品尤其是小說的批評研究中,將之應用于文學翻譯的研究卻不多見。小說作為文學作品的一員有很強的敘事特征,主要體現(xiàn)在其敘事結(jié)構(gòu)和敘事技巧上。霍桑的《紅字》正是以其多元化的敘事視角和豐富的引語轉(zhuǎn)換來呈現(xiàn)其精湛的敘事風格。因此,在翻譯《紅字》時,譯者除了要抓住原作與譯作的語言差異,更需著重把握原作敘事特點以充分體現(xiàn)原作者在創(chuàng)作時對語言形式的把握及其敘事意圖。譯者若是忽略這兩點,原作的文學和藝術(shù)價值便難以在譯文中保留和再現(xiàn)。本文以姚乃強譯的《紅字》為研究文本,選取具有代表性的例子,采用對比...
