Re: Instructions for ‘gold’ open access publishing and licensing
At article submission you indicated your intent to publish open access. Now that your article has been accepted for publication, we would like to give you some further guidance on how to achieve open access publishing with Elsevier.
All gold open access articles will be immediately and permanently free for everyone to read and download on Elsevier’s platforms under the author’s choice of user license. A publication fee of between $500 and $5000, depending on the journal, is payable by the author or their research sponsor for this service.
If you wish to publish gold open access, please do the following:
1. Confirm your gold open access order by completing the ‘Research Funding and Sponsored open access’ form at the link you received in a separate e-mail. The form includes:
- The open access fee for this journal (between $500 and $5000 USD).
- The option to tell us whether you or your funder will be invoiced for the open access fee.
- The option to place a secure credit card order.
2. Decide on the Creative Commons (CC) user license under which your article will be published. This license defines permitted third party reuse of your article.
Kindly note that to comply with your funding body’s open access policy or mandate, you may require a specific user license. For information about this please visit Your user license selection cannot be changed once your article has been included in an issue for publication.
One of these licenses is available for your article:
- CC BY-NC-ND ()
- CC BY-NC-SA ()
- CC BY ()

Please pick only one license; the choice of license will not affect the fee.
3. Inform us of your choice of Creative Commons user license as follows:
- Download the PDF document of your chosen license.
- Complete the form digitally, being sure to include your name, article title, and our reference number shown at the top of this e-mail.
- If your article title does not fit the space provided in the form please enter as much as you can.
- Print the completed form, sign it and send a scanned version within 1 week, to OAlicense@elsevier.com.
We will invoice the open access publication fee and open your article on our platforms under your selected user license.
If you no longer wish to publish gold open access, please do the following:
1. Confirm that you no longer want gold open access by completing the ‘Research Funding and Sponsored Open Access’ form at the link you received in a separate e-mail. Kindly select the option that applies to you (the form includes ‘green’ open access options for which no fee is payable).
2. Reply to this email indicating that you no longer want to publish gold open access.
We will make the Journal Publishing Agreement available to you, allowing publication under the subscription model.
