[Abstract]:The audio-visual database system, which is being jointly developed by the Northwestern University Library and the Indiana University Library, has recently received a federal grant of $967,000 to further enhance the capacity of archival institutions to manage and enable large-scale video and audio digital collections. The National leadership Fund (No. LG-70-17-0042-17) from the American Institute of Museums and Library Services (Institute of Museum and Library Services,IMLS) is dedicated to functional development and sustainability maintenance of this open source tool. The tool is called the Avalon Media system. Avalon aims to help institutions manage and provide audio and video materials for teachers, students and researchers. Avalon's planning, design and development are funded by the IMLS and Andrew W.Mellon Foundation. Northwestern University and Indiana University are responsible for the software development of the open source tool, while major agencies are responsible for testing to ensure that the system meets the needs of the research, teaching and cultural heritage communities. Northwestern University Library implemented Avalon, as a video and audio repository two and a half years ago. Currently, Avalon operates in six institutions, including Northwestern University, Indiana University, Virginia
