從拉丁語到古漢語——漢譯《幾何原本》卷一“界說”的翻譯分析

【摘要】:《幾何原本》是第一部漢譯西方數學名著。一般認為,古代漢語和拉丁語在語法結構、文體形式、詞語語義等方面有著巨大差異。因此,一部西方科學巨著如何跨越語言屏障得以翻譯?又如何在異質文化中得以傳播?要回答這些問題,首要之事需要探考利瑪竇、徐光啟怎樣把克拉維烏斯拉丁語版的《歐幾里得原本十五卷》(Euclidis Elementorum Libri ⅩⅤ)翻譯成古漢語的《幾何原本》。本文以漢譯《幾何原本》第一卷"界說"(定義)為例,從術語勘定、拉漢比照、語句解構、定義分析等方面,對36條"界說"進行全面釋讀。研究表明,無論是語義還是文體,漢譯《幾何原本》的"界說"基本上做到了用切近而自然的對等語再現了原文信息。利瑪竇和徐光啟用古漢語重構了古典西方數學的邏輯推理和公理化體系,在中西文化交流史上具有重要的里程碑意義。
