伴隨著2010中國(guó)上海世博會(huì)“城市,讓生活更美好”的舉辦,城市化再次得到全球范圍的關(guān)注。城市是文化的孕育所,文化是城市的生命。美國(guó)城市規(guī)劃思想家劉易斯·芒福德認(rèn)為城市的根本功能在于文化積累,文化創(chuàng)新,在于留傳文化,教育人民。城市文化的構(gòu)成狀況決定著社會(huì)制度和人類個(gè)體。 維多利亞時(shí)代的英國(guó)是世界第一工業(yè)強(qiáng)國(guó),工業(yè)生產(chǎn)能力比全世界的總和還大。城市化是工業(yè)社會(huì)的一大標(biāo)志,生產(chǎn)的發(fā)展帶動(dòng)了經(jīng)濟(jì)和社會(huì)生活觀念和生活方式的變化。城市化帶來財(cái)富的同時(shí)也帶來了許多社會(huì)問題,如人口膨脹,住房緊缺,環(huán)境污染,道德下降,人情冷漠等。生活在19世紀(jì)維多利亞時(shí)代的英國(guó)作家狄更斯對(duì)城市寄予了極大關(guān)注。他的小說寫作背景大多設(shè)置在倫敦,字里行間流露出濃郁的城市氣息。作為一名富有良知和責(zé)任心的作家,他深切關(guān)注人民大眾的生活狀態(tài),以及工業(yè)化帶來的城市問題。從狄更斯的小說分析他的城市觀,他對(duì)于城市的描寫基調(diào)灰暗,從對(duì)城市骯臟,混亂的景物描寫到教育,司法,監(jiān)獄制度的種種弊端,再到人際關(guān)系的爾虞我詐,唯利是圖,總體上狄更斯對(duì)城市持悲觀,厭惡態(tài)度,強(qiáng)調(diào)城市的復(fù)雜和混亂,批判工業(yè)污染和管理制度的弊端以及道德下降,但是他并不反對(duì)工業(yè)進(jìn)步的積極面。同時(shí),他宣揚(yáng)人道主義,提倡博愛。
