伴隨著2010中國上海世博會“城市,讓生活更美好”的舉辦,城市化再次得到全球范圍的關注。城市是文化的孕育所,文化是城市的生命。美國城市規(guī)劃思想家劉易斯·芒福德認為城市的根本功能在于文化積累,文化創(chuàng)新,在于留傳文化,教育人民。城市文化的構成狀況決定著社會制度和人類個體。 維多利亞時代的英國是世界第一工業(yè)強國,工業(yè)生產(chǎn)能力比全世界的總和還大。城市化是工業(yè)社會的一大標志,生產(chǎn)的發(fā)展帶動了經(jīng)濟和社會生活觀念和生活方式的變化。城市化帶來財富的同時也帶來了許多社會問題,如人口膨脹,住房緊缺,環(huán)境污染,道德下降,人情冷漠等。生活在19世紀維多利亞時代的英國作家狄更斯對城市寄予了極大關注。他的小說寫作背景大多設置在倫敦,字里行間流露出濃郁的城市氣息。作為一名富有良知和責任心的作家,他深切關注人民大眾的生活狀態(tài),以及工業(yè)化帶來的城市問題。從狄更斯的小說分析他的城市觀,他對于城市的描寫基調(diào)灰暗,從對城市骯臟,混亂的景物描寫到教育,司法,監(jiān)獄制度的種種弊端,再到人際關系的爾虞我詐,唯利是圖,總體上狄更斯對城市持悲觀,厭惡態(tài)度,強調(diào)城市的復雜和混亂,批判工業(yè)污染和管理制度的弊端以及道德下降,但是他并不反對工業(yè)進步的積極面。同時,他宣揚人道主義,提倡博愛。
