托馬斯·哈代（1840-1928）是英國維多利亞時期著名的小說家兼詩人�！犊ㄋ固貥蚴虚L》是其以威塞克斯為背景敘述的“性格與環(huán)境小說”中的代表作之一。小說一經(jīng)發(fā)表便獲得社會及文學(xué)界廣泛關(guān)注及熱烈討論。國內(nèi)外的文學(xué)評論家對該小說的主題、主要人物描寫以及敘事技巧等多方面,從形式批評主義、女性批評主義以及精神批評主義等多方位角度進(jìn)行了大量的研究,取得了豐富的研究成果。作為語言學(xué)及結(jié)構(gòu)主義的重要原則和概念,二元對立在文學(xué)批評領(lǐng)域的運用指的是將一部文學(xué)作品分析成多個對立但又相互聯(lián)系的二元對立項,進(jìn)而分析這些對立項,最后解讀隱藏在對立項背后的深刻含義,幫助讀者理解作品思想�！犊ㄋ固貥蚴虚L》存在著大量的二元對立項,因此運用二元對立原則解讀該作品具有一定意義。本文在前人研究的基礎(chǔ)上嘗試用結(jié)構(gòu)主義理論的核心——二元對立對《卡斯特橋市長》進(jìn)行較深入和系統(tǒng)的分析,進(jìn)而揭示作者是如何巧妙應(yīng)用二元對立原則體現(xiàn)悲劇主題及渲染小說的悲劇色彩。本文主要對以下三組二元對立項進(jìn)行剖析:（1）意志與命運的對立。通過描述主人公亨查德與露西妲為追求幸福與殘酷命運的抗?fàn)幍谋瘎」适?揭示作者的“宿命論”悲劇思想:人類的抗?fàn)幵趶姶蟊瘎?..
