[Abstract]:Besieged City is a very important satirical novel in the history of Chinese literature. One of the major features of this work is that the author uses a lot of puns, which are not only subtle in form but also profound in meaning. [besieged] has been translated into many languages since its publication in 1947, and its English translation has been translated by Jeanne Kellyn and Nathan K. Mao, The German version was translated by Monika Motschch. How translators translate the puns in the original texts reflects their understanding of the works and their views on translation. Since there is no one-to-one correspondence between most languages, pun translation has always been a difficult problem in translation. Many scholars in translation studies believe that pun translation is difficult, even untranslatable. Different from the traditional view, the Belgian linguist DirkDelabastita's pun theory holds that puns are translatable, and puts forward 10 translation strategies: puns are translated into the same type of puns, and puns are translated into different types of puns. Puns are translated as different puns, puns as non-puns, puns translated as zero, text copied, non-puns translated as pun, zero translated as pun, and as editorial means. On this basis, 32 examples of pun translation in the English and German versions of besieged City are divided into two categories: the same strategy and the different strategies, and the differences and similarities between English and German translation are compared. This paper analyzes whether the meaning of the translated text is consistent with the original text, and analyzes the possible reasons. From the analysis and comparison, it can be seen that the English version mainly adopts the strategy of translating pun into non-puns, while the translation of German versions is more flexible, and the strategy of translating pun into puns, puns like puns and non-puns is used in a balanced way. This is because the translator of the English version pays more attention to convey the meaning of the original text than pun, while the translator of the German version thinks that puns are an important element of the work and have profound meaning, so they tend to retain the pun form. The differences in translation strategies also lead to the differences in translation effects between the two versions: puns are mostly translated into non-puns in English versions, and most of the semantics are consistent with the original text as a whole. However, in some cases, the loss of pun makes it difficult for the reader to understand the context. The German version is more flexible in strategy, and there are more examples of puns and puns than in English versions, resulting in more slight deviations in meaning. But the reader can understand the meaning in context and annotation. The analysis of puns in besieged City also provides inspiration for the translation of puns: the translator should pay attention to the role of puns in understanding context. Skillfully combine various strategies (such as the use of editing methods, and learn from the translation of similar languages and cultures.
