人際功能或人際意義作為系統(tǒng)功能語法中三大功能/意義中的一種,指的是人們用語言和他人交往,建立和保持一定的人際關系,用語言來影響別人的行為,同時用語言來表達對世界的看法甚至改變他人對世界的看法。韓禮德認為,人際意義主要通過語氣、情態(tài)和語調(diào)來體現(xiàn)。但他也指出,人稱系統(tǒng)也可以體現(xiàn)人際意義。 留學申請拒絕信作為拒絕信函的一種,因涉及威脅面子的拒絕言語行為從而體現(xiàn)出重要的人際意義。此類信函既傳達了拒絕信息,又涉及對寫信人與收信人之間人際關系的處理。 本文選取30封網(wǎng)上搜集的留學申請拒絕信(電子郵件)作為語料,采取定性分析和定量分析相結合的研究方法,確定了信件的語境配置,對信件中語言的語氣,情態(tài),和人稱系統(tǒng)進行了分析。經(jīng)過分析發(fā)現(xiàn)：(1)寫信人在與收信人的交流中占據(jù)主導地位,其話語正式、客觀且具有權威性；(2)寫信人表現(xiàn)出誠意和對收信人的尊重,考慮到收信人的面子,并降低對其的傷害；(3)有時寫信人將拒絕的責任轉移到收信人身上,并且直截了當?shù)乇砻鲗κ招湃说木芙^。這些結果并不矛盾,由信函的話語基調(diào)和功能所決定。
