在中國(guó)近兩千年的翻譯實(shí)踐中,晚清維新派作為一個(gè)政治團(tuán)體出現(xiàn)了一批偉大的翻譯家、譯論家與學(xué)者。他們的翻譯活動(dòng)對(duì)清末中國(guó)翻譯的發(fā)展作出了杰出的貢獻(xiàn)。維新派的翻譯實(shí)踐無(wú)論是在譯書(shū)的選擇還是在其譯作的社會(huì)功能上,都具有進(jìn)步性,其最杰出的代表是嚴(yán)復(fù)、林紓和梁?jiǎn)⒊?他們不僅留下了一部部不朽的翻譯作品,也在很大程度上改造了中國(guó)人落后的思想觀念,成功地為封建社會(huì)晚期的中國(guó)輸入了國(guó)外先進(jìn)的社會(huì)制度和學(xué)術(shù)思想。長(zhǎng)久以來(lái),針對(duì)維新派中的代表人物及其譯作,各種研究成果層出不窮。但學(xué)者們大多局限在對(duì)維新派人物的個(gè)案研究,對(duì)維新派翻譯行為共性的研究似不多見(jiàn)。筆者認(rèn)為不同的歷史時(shí)期賦予了翻譯不同的歷史使命,同一時(shí)間段的翻譯作品必然有其共性。維新派翻譯家的譯作是在特殊歷史條件下本著特殊目的以特殊方式移譯過(guò)來(lái)的。他們對(duì)原作進(jìn)行增刪乃至改寫(xiě)的譯法,雖不是“翻譯正法’但總體都服從于救亡圖存,思想啟蒙的大目標(biāo)。根據(jù)Hans J.Vermeer的目的論,翻譯是一種目的性行為,翻譯行為所要達(dá)到的目的決定整個(gè)翻譯行為的過(guò)程,即結(jié)果決定方法。目的論的貢獻(xiàn)不僅僅在于為譯者增加了可供選擇的翻譯策略,也減少了對(duì)譯者的束縛,使譯者主觀能動(dòng)性...
