本文以接受美學(xué)理論和目的論為理論依據(jù)，通過(guò)描述分析法來(lái)探討譯文讀者在林紓翻譯中的角色。接受美學(xué)認(rèn)為在作者、作品和讀者的三維關(guān)系中，讀者并不是被動(dòng)的而是能動(dòng)的創(chuàng)立者，譯文讀者對(duì)譯者能否成功地實(shí)現(xiàn)其翻譯目的起著決定性的作用。從目的論看，所有的翻譯都指向其預(yù)定的對(duì)象，因?yàn)榉g本身就是為譯入語(yǔ)目的、環(huán)境和對(duì)象創(chuàng)造出符合譯入語(yǔ)背景的文本。本文由此提出理論假設(shè)：譯者在翻譯過(guò)程中應(yīng)該考慮譯文讀者的角色。林紓在中國(guó)文學(xué)翻譯史上是一個(gè)重要而且極具影響力的譯者。但是自從他的第一本譯作在1899年問(wèn)世以來(lái)，他的翻譯作品引起中國(guó)學(xué)者的廣泛爭(zhēng)議。本文試圖從譯文讀者的角度來(lái)分析林紓的翻譯作品，并且指出林紓在其翻譯過(guò)程中考慮了譯文讀者的政治意識(shí)形態(tài)，語(yǔ)言期待視野，意識(shí)形態(tài)期待視野以及文學(xué)規(guī)范，從而采取有效的翻譯策略來(lái)達(dá)到其翻譯目的。
