規(guī)范與翻譯:林紓翻譯的描述研究

【摘要】:林紓(1852-1924) ,字琴南。清末著名翻譯家。曾與二十幾位口譯者合作,以古文 翻譯一百七十余部西方小說,其中世界文學(xué)名著有四十種左右。林紓的譯作不僅開闊 了當(dāng)時(shí)國人的眼界,而且也促進(jìn)了我國現(xiàn)代小說的發(fā)展。但是很多人認(rèn)為林譯小說的 質(zhì)量不高。木文運(yùn)用了翻譯規(guī)范理論從歷史的社會(huì)的角度重新對(duì)林譯小說進(jìn)行了探 討。 全文共分五章。 第一章介紹了本文的寫作背景、意圖、目的以及寫作方法。 第二章回顧了前人對(duì)林譯小說的評(píng)價(jià)。從面世至今,對(duì)于林譯小說的評(píng)價(jià)是毀多 于譽(yù)。由于采用意譯,其中不乏刪節(jié),又因其本人不通西文,譯文忠實(shí)度不高。甚至 有人對(duì)其是否是翻譯產(chǎn)生了疑問。又因?yàn)榱旨倢?duì)新文化運(yùn)動(dòng)的保守姿態(tài)被夸大,使得 他的翻譯也遭到貶低。但是這一切與林紓的翻譯曾風(fēng)靡一時(shí)的事實(shí)和它的歷史地位極 不相稱。 第三章介紹了翻譯規(guī)范理論并試圖結(jié)合圖里和徹斯特曼對(duì)翻譯規(guī)范的分類搭建 探討林紓翻譯的框架。以源語文本為品評(píng)譯作標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的研究方法已經(jīng)受到了挑戰(zhàn)。因?yàn)?它的解釋力相當(dāng)有限,而且容易將問題簡單化,導(dǎo)致結(jié)論片面。圖里的翻譯規(guī)范理論 使我們可以把視線投入宿語文化中,擺脫簡單的譯文原文的對(duì)比閱讀。又由于規(guī)范本 身的歷史性和社會(huì)性,使我們可以將林紓的翻譯與它所處的歷史文化相結(jié)合。本文結(jié) 合圖里與徹斯特曼對(duì)翻譯規(guī)范的分類,從五個(gè)方面多層次多角度地對(duì)林紓的翻譯進(jìn)行 考察,其中原發(fā)型規(guī)范和原初型規(guī)范試圖宏觀地把握翻譯發(fā)生時(shí)的歷史文化背景;操 作規(guī)范則微觀地但卻直觀地反映了規(guī)范對(duì)翻譯過程的影響,而預(yù)期規(guī)范和職業(yè)規(guī)范則 從另外的側(cè)面表明翻譯過程中讀者期待和職業(yè)道德的影響。 第四章著重運(yùn)用翻譯規(guī)范理論研究林紓的翻譯。對(duì)原發(fā)型規(guī)范和原初型規(guī)范的考 察,我們成功地將林紓與其合作者的翻譯活動(dòng)置于當(dāng)時(shí)的社會(huì)歷史背景下,他們?cè)诋?dāng) 時(shí)翻譯西方小說并使用意譯是順應(yīng)當(dāng)時(shí)的規(guī)范的。通過研究操作規(guī)范,文章探討了他 們?cè)诜瓭芍惺褂脛h節(jié),添加和改動(dòng)的原因,我們發(fā)現(xiàn)有時(shí)是受到古文表達(dá)的限制,有 時(shí)則出于對(duì)時(shí)局的考慮,喚起讀者,有時(shí)屈從于讀者的閱讀習(xí)慣等等。最后通過預(yù)期 規(guī)范和職業(yè)規(guī)范的討論,將讀者的期待與作為翻譯人員應(yīng)遵循的職業(yè)規(guī)范納入了我們 的視野。翻譯活動(dòng)中諸多的決定因素共同地影響了翻譯的最終結(jié)果。
