美國非裔文化構(gòu)建中宗教成分是不容忽視的。宗教元素滲入到美國非裔文化的各個(gè)方面,也是黑人文學(xué)的一個(gè)傳統(tǒng)主題。評(píng)論家理查德K.巴克斯大勒（Richard K. Barksdale）和柯尼斯·柯納門（Keneth Kinnamon）在他們編撰的《美國黑人作家》（Black Writers of America: A Comprehensive Anthology）就曾經(jīng)指出,基督教十分受美國非裔作家的青睞,在他們的作品中,宗教成分屢見不鮮。早期的黑人作家菲力斯·惠特利（Phillis Wheatley）在十八世紀(jì)六十年代就曾經(jīng)在她的詩歌中談到雖然她是以奴隸身份來到美國,但還是十分感謝命運(yùn)將她從異教的非洲帶到信仰基督教的美洲。佛蘭德里克·道格拉斯（Frederick Douglass）在1845年的個(gè)人記述中也十分認(rèn)可基督教的魅力。在黑人當(dāng)中十分盛行的黑人圣歌是美國非裔表達(dá)歡樂和訴說困惑的主要方式。詹姆斯·鮑德溫就是在這樣的宗教土壤里誕生的,他是繼理查德·賴特（Richard Right）和拉爾夫·艾利森（Ralph Ellison）之后又一重要美國非裔作家。詹姆斯·鮑德溫于1924年出生在一...
