論“含混”的意圖 ——解讀《皮埃爾,或含混》中的“含混”主題

赫爾曼·梅爾維爾是美國文學史上一位頗具影響力的作家。在《皮埃爾,或含混》這部作品中,作者旨在從不同側面來探討引發(fā)批評家對立觀點的“含混”主題。通過探討善與惡以及異性戀與同性戀之間的含混,本文將揭示含混的意圖就是旨在證明這樣一個道理:世界本身就是一個含混的世界,繼續(xù)沉浸在界限分明的二元對立思維中將不可避免地導致悲劇。威廉·燕卜蓀關于含混的理論更多關注細致分析文本中的不同修辭。與之不同,本文作者從后現(xiàn)代“不確定性”的批評角度出發(fā)討論《皮埃爾》這部作品中不同層面的含混主題。本文由五個部分組成。第一部分為前言介紹了梅爾維爾的主要作品,重點介紹《皮埃爾,或含混》這部小說,列舉出本文討論的不同觀點。第二章介紹了威廉·燕卜蓀《含混七型》中關于含混的理論以及后現(xiàn)代批評家對含混理論的思考與發(fā)展。通過與約翰·班揚的《天路歷程》以及但丁·亞利基利的《地獄篇》作比較,進而探討梅爾維爾是如何在《皮埃爾》中通過戲仿以上兩部寓言作品來闡釋“含混”主題的。第三章通過梳理“善惡”觀念的發(fā)展歷史,向我們展示了小說中主要人物善與惡的含混性。第四章則主要著眼于主人公皮埃爾性別身份的含混性探討。通過“亂倫”主題揭示皮埃爾與他的...
