[Abstract]:Because of the special form and style of Gothic novels, an important problem in grasping Gothic novels is the relationship between these novels and social reality. Although Gothic novels are different from realistic novels that appeared in the early 18th century, they are mainly characterized by imagination and non-reality, but they are still important materials for studying the society and history of the late 18th century. Although the absurd plot is not as truthful as the mirror, it is also a reflection of social reality in a disguised form, and can even express the social contradictions and new changes which are difficult for the traditional realistic literature to reach. Yuan Yu-ling, a Qing man, said in his review of Journey to the West that "the world's most illusory things are extremely true." As terror, darkness and depravity account for a large part of Gothic novels, how to interpret the relationship between Gothic novels and the social reality of the 18th century in England has significant political implications. This paper focuses on the contradictory attitudes of the British middle class towards themselves, history and reality in the late 18th century to the early 19th century, which is a classic Gothic novel published from the end of the 18th century to the early 19th century. This paper studies how Gothic novels express and deal with these contradictions and conflicts. This paper is divided into five parts: the first part briefly introduces the research situation of Gothic novels at home and abroad and the innovation of this paper; The second part mainly focuses on the middle class characteristics of Gothic novels and the embarrassed middle class society, contradictory realistic ideas and historical realistic ideas in the 18th century British social transformation. The third part mainly discusses the awkward social status of the middle class in the transition period of the British society in the 18th century. The fourth part mainly discusses the realistic idea of the middle class contradiction in the period of British social transformation in the 18th century. The fifth part mainly discusses the historical concept of the middle class contradiction in the transition period of the 18 th century through Eudhofer's Mystery.
