[Abstract]:Growth is a common and indispensable stage in one's life. In fiction, growth provides the protagonist with the necessary knowledge, confidence and ability to face the real world independently. In literary circles, initiation stories have become a more and more common theme in recent years. Researchers and scholars have applied the initiation story theory to a large number of literary works. However, few researchers interpret Sandra Cisneros's novel The Cabin on Mango Street from the perspective of initiation stories. The novel describes the growth of Esperanza, the second generation of Mexican immigrants. She has experienced setbacks and failures, realizing an epiphany that has made clear her dream of pursuing the unique female identity of the ethnic minority. In the process, she has achieved her own growth.
Based on the background of ethnic problems and immigrant life, this paper analyzes the growth experience of the heroine Esperanza in the immigrant community, and points out that her growth process is a dream-filled process, reflecting her desire to pursue a unique minority female identity.
As a Bildungsroman, the protagonist's growth story is typical of ethnic minorities; her growing confusion is the sadness of Mexican Americans. How to get rid of racial discrimination and realize the awakening of women's self-consciousness is a great challenge and a difficult obstacle for ethnic women. However, the protagonist is not afraid, she has the ideal, the pursuit of independent consciousness. Under the influence of the people around her, in daily life, the protagonist has a more comprehensive understanding of herself and society, she is no longer bound, eager to change her destiny, and has a high sense of mission, willing to contribute to the better development of the entire ethnic group. By telling the story of Mango Street, Esperanza is bound to inspire ethnic minorities to strive, acquire knowledge and change their destiny.
In order to make this argument clearer, this paper interprets the heroine's dream from the perspective of female growth, and shows how she realizes her dream and pursuit in the end. Secondly, by analyzing the identity crisis faced by the heroine Esperanza, we can find out how terrible the environment in which she grew up: poverty, racial differences, sexism and confusion of self-worth. At the same time, the development of the heroine's dream plays an important role in her growth because of this process. She has witnessed the frustrations and hardships of her pursuit of her dreams and unique identity. Therefore, under the influence of the growth guide and the growth partner, and after experiencing the frustrations and twists and realizing the insight, Esperanza finally defined her dream direction and found the way to realize her dream.
The whole paper consists of five parts, including introduction, two main chapters and conclusion.
The introduction first introduces the background materials and literary reviews of the novel The House on Mango Street, and then introduces the background and career of Sandra Cisneros, his famous novel The House on Mango Street, and the hero of the novel. Chapter Two focuses on the classical Bildungsroman and the American Bildungsroman to clarify the similarities and differences between the educational novels and the Bildungsroman, and tries to trace the origin of the Bildungsroman to sort out the development of Bildungsroman and its impact on American writers as an American Educational Novel. The American Bildungsroman is rooted in the rich soil of American culture. In the soil, it has its own characteristics and attraction. As a female initiation novel, The Cabin on Mango Street shows us a vivid picture of the growth of the little girl Esperanza.
Chapter Three focuses on the growth of Chinese and American Mexican women in The Cabin on Mango Street. Esperanza, the heroine of the novel, is a semi-autobiographical character portrayed by the author. In her mind, the house is the symbol of home and her yearning for warmth and happiness. Meanwhile, Esperanza's feminine consciousness is gradually awakening, and she begins to seriously examine her own female identity, as well as thinking about ethnic conditions.
This part summarizes the heroine Esperanza's ups and downs, and finally realizes what her pursuit and dream is: to give up the white culture and instill it into her, to own a beautiful white house as a criterion for defining her own value, and to turn to To find or create a space of her own; to reject the idea that most women want to change their destiny through marriage, but through their own efforts to change their destiny, is to her writing; to refuse to be confined to a narrow Mexican community, but to choose to go out and learn the mainstream culture and talk to it, I hope that I can come back to help the people of Mexico after her growth.
