[Abstract]:Breakfast of Tiffany is the work of Truman Capote, a famous southern literary writer in the history of American literature. After its launch, the novel was popular with readers and republished many times, and was selected as time magazine's 100 Best English novels. Holly Goletley, the protagonist of the novel, is a New York socialite. Her life is full of novelty and desire. The novel brought unprecedented fame to Capote and also marked a turning point in his writing career. Breakfast of Tiffany was written in 1958. Although there is no evidence that Capote was influenced by existentialism in the writing of the novel, this paper argues that the theme of life embodied in the novel is very consistent with the existentialism popular in the 1940s and 1960s. Capote's description of Holly coincides with that of Sartre, the representative of existentialism, so this paper attempts to interpret Breakfast of Tiffany from the perspective of existentialism, so that people can have a new understanding of the novel. This paper is divided into four parts. The first part introduces Capote's life and the background of Breakfast in Tiffany. The second part expounds the theoretical framework of this paper and introduces existentialism and its representative character Sartre. Some basic concepts of Sartre existentialism such as "being before essence" are briefly explained. The third part is the main part of the paper, corresponding to the basic concept of existentialism, from three aspects of the works of Existentialism interpretation. Holly, the protagonist of the novel, determines her life course from rural to urban, from ordinary girl to sociable girl, and finally forgets the past and goes to South America again through three important choices. In these three free choices, she assumed the responsibility of choice and confirmed the essence of self. In her pursuit of freedom, Holly also experienced anxiety, alienation, pain, self-deception these psychological confusion. Her relationship with others can also be summed up as desire, indifference, hatred and love. The fourth part concludes that the novel Breakfast of Tiffany has a strong existentialist characteristic. The existentialist interpretation of the novel can make readers have a new understanding of the novel. Breakfast of Tiffany is not only a best-selling novel, but also a work that pays attention to the state of human existence and the state of mind. Although the novel was born in the 1950s, the protagonist's living state and psychological confusion are similar to those of contemporary people. By analyzing the existentialism in Breakfast of Tiffany, we can help readers better understand the existentialism characteristic and connotation of the novel.
