專有名詞是名詞中比較特殊的一類,是相對(duì)普通名詞而言的某人或某物特有的名稱。翻譯專有名詞時(shí),譯者需要查詢大量資料,了解相關(guān)背景信息,掌握專有名詞翻譯的恰當(dāng)方法,以便譯文讀者理解專有名詞所指的具體事物。The Letters of Samuel Beckett Volume(I)(《貝克特書信集卷一》)收錄了1929至1940年間薩繆爾·貝克特寫給朋友、同事和出版商的書信,從個(gè)人視角描繪了20世紀(jì)30年代的西歐,記錄了他的心聲和感悟。貝克特精通多種語言,擅長文學(xué)創(chuàng)作,又廣泛涉獵音樂和美術(shù),書信中提及了大量專有名詞。因此,對(duì)這些專有名詞的恰當(dāng)表述是翻譯該書的主要難點(diǎn)之一。本文主要依據(jù)1937年12月至1938年4月之間的信件及其注釋的漢譯,以案例分析的形式探討專有名詞的翻譯原則和方法,為全四卷專有名詞的翻譯確立規(guī)范。筆者以翻譯界對(duì)專有名詞的定義及“約定俗成,名從主人”翻譯原則為指導(dǎo),將文本中的專有名詞分為英語類和非英語類,探討了約定俗成、符合標(biāo)準(zhǔn)、參照平行文本、音從主人、義從主人和參照英文注釋六種翻譯方法,旨在為《薩繆爾·貝克特書信集》后三卷的翻譯提供規(guī)范和有價(jià)值的參考,即保障后續(xù)同類術(shù)語譯...
