[Abstract]:Traditionally, translation is seen as a conversion between two languages. In recent years, more and more translation theorists and practitioners regard it as a kind of cultural exchange, that is, it is not only a language activity, but also a cultural exchange. With the further development of cultural studies, the Western translation theory research has a cultural turn trend, and the Chinese translation theory research has also adapted to this trend. Many translators have done a lot of research in this field and have achieved fruitful results. As early as the 1930 s, Lin Yutang incorporated cultural factors into the study of translation. This thesis mainly discusses Lin Yutang's creation and translation of Chinese and English essays in the 1930 s. Lin Yutang first wrote essays in English and then translated them into Chinese essays. Why Lin Yutang first use English to create essays, and choose those topics related to Chinese and Western culture, this is the focus of this paper. In order to analyze this point, the author makes an in-depth study of Lin Yutang's cultural view and bilingual writing. This study also discusses how Lin Yutang translated his English essay into Chinese. In order to clarify this point, the author analyzes Lin Yutang's translation theory and translation practice. Lin Yutang's essay creation embodies his thoughts, opinions and unique cultural views. The 1830 s was the peak of Lin Yutang's essay creation. Lin Yutang's essays are usually known in Chinese. In fact, they were originally published in the form of an English version of the Chinese Review Weekly, and then in the Chinese version of the Analects of Confucius. The Earth and the Universe Wind are published in journals. Lin Yutang's creation of essays is inseparable from his special growth environment, educational background and life experience. The contents of his essays also reflect the similarities and differences between Chinese and western cultures, so we must consider his unique cultural views when analyzing his essays. Lin Yutang writes essays in both Chinese and English for some inevitable reasons. First of all, he has rich knowledge and profound understanding of Chinese and Western culture, secondly, his proficiency in English enables him to convey Chinese culture to western readers fully in authentic English. Third, his positive attitude to life and his unique religious beliefs are also one of the reasons. Lin Yutang's translation of English essays into Chinese is based on his own translation theory. His translation theory is reflected in one of his articles, on Translation. In analyzing the translation practice of Lin Yutang's essays, we can see that as a translator, Lin Yutang tries to strike a balance between the source language, the target language and the art. In order to convey the message and the beauty of the original text faithfully, the target text can be accepted by the target language readers to meet the standards of faithfulness, smoothness and beauty. However, not every essay is translated faithfully to the original text. This raises a question for our translation researchers, that is, how to achieve mutual restriction and balance in dealing with the three standards of faithfulness, conformity and beauty, in order to achieve the purpose of intercultural communication. The results are instructive for Lin Yutang and his translation theories and works.
