1991年A.S.拜厄特以小說《占有:一部羅曼司》獲得了英國布克獎。該小說交織了愛情、偵探與文學(xué)理論界人士的生活百態(tài)。自問世以來,該小說獲得了文學(xué)評論界的高度重視。當(dāng)代批評家與學(xué)者隨之從女性主義,神話原型批評及互文性等各種角度提出了不少闡釋與解讀。空間理論作為當(dāng)代文學(xué)評論界興起的一種較為新穎的文本批評方法,旨在打破時間在敘事中的主導(dǎo)地位,強(qiáng)調(diào)空間作為敘事的一種重要手段在文學(xué)文本中的重要作用!墩加小分胁⒅门c交織的三個空間——神話空間、維多利亞時代空間及現(xiàn)代社會空間呈現(xiàn)出不同的社會景觀空間。與此對應(yīng)的是,生活其中的女性人物也表現(xiàn)出表面相似實則不同的心理特征,從而在面對愛情時,,三個空間中的女性表現(xiàn)出了不同的態(tài)度。本文運用空間理論,對三個空間進(jìn)行了剖析。本文第二章介紹了空間理論?臻g作為時間的承載物,是一定社會文化雕琢的對象。同時,空間也能夠?qū)ι钇渲械娜宋锲鸬较拗频淖饔,從而激發(fā)人物不同的心理空間。本文第三章分析了神秘的神話空間,得出“城堡”及“荒原”這兩個意象是神話空間中女性的棲息之地。女性走出城堡和荒原后便失去了自己原本的主動性與創(chuàng)造性。在男性主導(dǎo)的社會中,女性人物選擇壓抑自己的本性從而保全自己的獨立性,于是,神話空間中的女性在面對愛情時具有恐懼的心理。本文第四章分析了維多利亞空間中的社會景觀對女性人物心理的影響。女性為了保證自己的藝術(shù)創(chuàng)造力不被干擾,在面對愛情時選擇了較為保守的態(tài)度。第五章則剖析了當(dāng)今社會空間及女性人物的心理特征。女性雖可以在事業(yè)上取得比男性更大的成就,但在面對生活時她們往往選擇隱藏自己的個性與才華,抑或高調(diào)展示自己的突出之處。在面對愛情時,現(xiàn)實空間中的女性較前兩個空間女性相比,明顯更加主動和勇敢。文章最后一章總結(jié)出三個空間中女性人物的戀愛觀,并得出女性人物在掌控自己命運的道路上不斷前進(jìn),在面對愛情時更加勇敢這一結(jié)論。本文從較為新穎的角度剖析拜厄特小說《占有》的主題,將有助于運用空間理論在評論文學(xué)作品中的使用。
The1991year Booker Prize winner A. S. Byatt elaborates in her best known novelPossession: A Romance a story of love, detective and the lives of literary critics. Sinceits publication, Possession has gained much attention from various scholars whoanalyze the themes or narratological techniques from feminist, archetypal andintertextual perspectives.As a new method for literary critics to analyze the texts, spatial theory overthrowsthe dominance of time in narratology. It attaches great importance to space’s role inlaying out the story. Possession involves three interwoven yet distinctive spaces, namely,the mystic mythical space, the indistinct Victorian space and the depressed modernspace. Meanwhile, as social spaces distinct with each other, women living in thosespaces tend to differ those in the other spaces in psychological phase. As a result, whenfacing love, they show different attitudes.This thesis, drawing on the spatial theory and cultural geography, analyzes thethree spaces. The second chapter offers a brief introduction to space theory. The space isalways the object that contains the deployment of time, and at the same time is shapedby society and culture. The space in turn influences people’s lives. Chapter threeanalyzes the mythological space by paying great attention to the images of “castle” and“moor”. Leaving the moor or the castle means that women give up their originality andautonomy to the patriarchal society. Living in this social space, women have to reservethemselves if they intend to preserve their independence. As a result, when faced withlove, women are not brave enough to make the decision. Chapter four presents theinfluence of the Victorian social space’s great impact on women’s psychological space.In order to protect their talents from being intimidated by the patriarchal society, womenare either conservative or radical when they are facing love. Chapter five focuses on thedepressed modern social space and women’s psychological space in response to thesocial environment. Though they may be successful in their career, women still tend tohide their personality and talents as they are afraid of the outside world. However,compared with women in the other two spaces, modern world women are braver.Chapter six summarizes the features of the attitudes of women’s towards love indifferent spaces and historical tendency in the changes of their attitudes. Though womenare conserved at the very beginning of the human history, they are definitely able to be more confident and make progress in controlling their fates.This thesis offers a new perspective for readers and literary critics to interpret thethemes of this novel—spatial reading, therefore will encourage the application of spacetheory in critical reading of literary texts.
