【摘要】:《妙法蓮華經(jīng)》是中國佛教史上有著深遠(yuǎn)影響的一部大乘佛教經(jīng)典。該經(jīng)書一度被稱作“半個(gè)亞洲的福音書”。由于契合中國傳統(tǒng)文化,翻譯之后各種版本廣為流傳。通過調(diào)查發(fā)現(xiàn),廣大學(xué)者對(duì)《妙法蓮華經(jīng)》的譯本進(jìn)行了孜孜不倦的研究工作,其中對(duì)其漢譯本的研究不勝枚舉,英譯本研究卻寥若星辰。作為一名職業(yè)的漢學(xué)家,而不再是單純的傳教士,蘇慧廉在翻譯《妙法蓮華經(jīng)》的過程中必定有其獨(dú)特的處理方式,這正是筆者認(rèn)為該研究的價(jià)值所在。本文將以“翻譯史研究方法中的‘譯者為中心’理論”和“比較文學(xué)形象學(xué)中的‘自我’與‘他者’”為方法論指導(dǎo),并以譯者的漢學(xué)家身份為視角,對(duì)蘇慧廉的《妙法蓮華經(jīng)》譯本進(jìn)行研究,試圖探究蘇慧廉翻譯此經(jīng)的真正動(dòng)機(jī),揭示出以一名嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)?shù)穆殬I(yè)漢學(xué)家的身份翻譯此經(jīng),蘇慧廉,相對(duì)于先前其他的一些傳教士譯者而言,已擯棄固有的基督教偏見,翻譯更加客觀、準(zhǔn)確,簡(jiǎn)明,進(jìn)而揭示其翻譯的真正動(dòng)因是為西方學(xué)者研習(xí)佛經(jīng)之用。
