錦江書院山長考

【摘要】: 錦江書院自康熙四十三年,由時任四川按察使的劉德芳秉承四川巡撫“欲興文教以植人才”,“繼石室之流風(fēng)于無窮”之意,,在文翁石室故地修建以來,它一直是四川省的最高學(xué)“府,是有清一代四川人才培養(yǎng)最有成就的書院之一,也是四川省城名流薈萃、大家輩出的地方。書院山長中既有潛心作育人才、不慕榮勢的易簡、彭端淑、李惺、江錫嘏等士林圭臬,也有工于詩古文辭的鄭方城、儲掌文、伍肇齡等老儒宿學(xué),還有文武兼?zhèn)洹⒄曌恐母叱、楊芳燦、牛樹梅等清廷的能官良吏。在這些著名山長的滋育教導(dǎo)之下,錦江書院培養(yǎng)出了一大批學(xué)行俱佳的蜀中名士。如著名的詩人、學(xué)者、戲劇家,時稱“蜀中三才”的李調(diào)元,清末“戊戌變法六君子”之一的劉光第,清代四川唯一的狀元駱成驤,等等,都曾肄業(yè)錦江書院。 在漫長的錦江書院辦院過程中,作為一院之長的山長,當(dāng)然是起關(guān)鍵作用的核心人物。他們既是書院的行政組織者,又是書院的學(xué)術(shù)帶頭人,更是書院的靈魂性人物。他們對書院的學(xué)術(shù)研究與倡導(dǎo)、學(xué)術(shù)傳承與發(fā)展,書院的日常管理與制度建設(shè),書院諸生的學(xué)業(yè)成績,都負有直接的責(zé)任和起著決定性的作用。所以說,研究錦江書院的歷史面貌,首先莫過于研究錦江書院的山長了。他們的生平履歷、學(xué)術(shù)特點以及他們在教育方面的見解和為之所作的貢獻,是了解和評判書院辦學(xué)成就和影響首先應(yīng)當(dāng)考察的重要內(nèi)容。這便是本論文以“錦江書院山長考”為題的原因。 由于有關(guān)錦江書院的資料比較缺乏、零散和相對混雜,本文廣泛搜羅和鉤輯了大量的相關(guān)文獻資料,諸如《清史列傳》、《清史稿》、《碑傳集》、《清代七百名人傳》、雍正《四川通志》、嘉慶《四川通志》、嘉慶《福建通志》、嘉慶《廣東通志》中的《選舉》、《學(xué)校志》、《藝文》、《人物傳記》等,以及現(xiàn)存于四川省圖書館、四川大學(xué)圖書館內(nèi)的各縣縣志中的《選舉》、《學(xué)校》、《藝文》、《碑乘》等中有關(guān)錦江書院的記載,《錦里新編》、《清詩紀事》、《國朝全蜀詩抄》、《國朝先正事略》、《巴蜀文苑英華》等詩文集中的相關(guān)詩文和傳記。此外,還充分吸收現(xiàn)代書院及教育制度研究成果:瀏覽了鄧洪波先生的有關(guān)書院制度、歷史方面的通論性著作如《中國書院攬勝》、《中國書院制度研究》、《中國書院史》,季蕭風(fēng)等著《中國書院辭典》,程谷嘉的《中國書院史資料》,胡昭曦的《四川書院史》,楊布生的《岳麓書院山長考》,《中國教育制度通史》等等。 在充分占有和熟悉資料的前提下,本文側(cè)重清理了錦江書院各位山長的履歷仕宦、思想意識、教育成果等方面的內(nèi)容,并對其中存在的疑惑,進行考訂審察。主要做了以下幾項工作:一、重新厘定歷任山長的任職次第及時間,解決有關(guān)錦江書院山長任職時間記載含糊不清與任職次序記載混亂的問題。重點研究和分析他們在錦江書院任上都培育了那些人才,取得過何種業(yè)績,對錦江書院的制度建設(shè)做過何種貢獻,有何治學(xué)方法和育人特點,等等。二、為已知的歷任山長寫出小傳,記述他們的生平事略,重點探究了他們的學(xué)術(shù)特點和其學(xué)術(shù)對當(dāng)時和后世有何影響等問題。三、增補了《石室紀事情》等書中漏載的侯度、楊錫麟兩位山長和驗證了胡昭曦在《四川書院史》中增補的山長張晉生的問題,使書院山長人數(shù)從以前的二十一位增加到現(xiàn)在的二十四位。四、設(shè)計了一種關(guān)于書院山長傳略的新式寫法,即先表述其生平事跡,然后再重點分析他們在書院教育方面的業(yè)績、貢獻,在文化學(xué)術(shù)方面的成就、特點,以此反映書院山長在書院教育、學(xué)術(shù)造詣方面的成就。五、圍繞錦江書院歷任山長和書院諸生在清代政治思想、文化學(xué)術(shù)上的作用和影響,概括并分析了他們對清代四川文化學(xué)術(shù)的繼承與發(fā)展、人才培育、教育發(fā)展等方面的貢獻和影響。 通過對以上這些問題的探尋,對我們進一步認識、了解錦江書院在清代四川的歷史面貌、歷史價值和歷史影響,對書院展開個案研究等問題,無疑都是有裨益的。
