[Abstract]:Liu he's book "the Politics of Imperial discourse: the formation of Modern World order from the conflict between China and the West in Modern Times" has attracted widespread attention since its publication, both in English and in Chinese, showing the unique value of the book. First of all, his research perspective is quite novel. He draws on Foucault's discourse theory and points out that the conflict between China and Britain in modern times is a kind of discourse conflict, that is, a conflict of discourse politics. Secondly, the study of history is regarded as a semiotics turn of international politics, and the exchange between Chinese and British empires is not a clash of civilizations, but a collision of empires. As a result, a series of diplomatic disputes and negotiations were interpreted as the translation and misinterpretation of symbols, that is, symbolic events, which reflected the great changes in international relations in the 19th century. Third, the "symbolic event" is important because it involves the imagination of sovereignty, whether it is about the escape of the word "Yi", the translation of "public law of nations", and the rule of Queen Victoria and Empress Dowager Cixi. The compilation of Ma Shi Wen Tong is the embodiment of this kind of sovereign imagination, which reveals the unusual side of modern Chinese and Western conflicts. However, whether the study of discourse politics can take the place of realistic politics, whether Yi can be regarded as the core concept of Confucian classical sovereignty theory and whether ** can translate "China" should be reconsidered.
