[Abstract]:The enlargement of the European Union in May 2004 was one of the most important geopolitical events in Europe since the end of the Cold War. Membership means that the central and eastern European countries have fulfilled their long-cherished wish to return to Europe, and Europe has thus achieved unprecedented reunification. The status of the EU member states has also had a profound impact on the new member states. Preliminary analysis shows that EU membership does not necessarily lead to the consolidation of democracy in the new member states, but membership promotes the economic development of the new member states, enhances the economic potential of the new member states, and enhances the international status of the new member states as a result.
