【摘要】：按照歐洲傳統(tǒng)英語用法,"邊疆"(frontier)一般指兩國交界。在美國,此種含義最初得以沿用。但是,隨著19世紀(jì)西進(jìn)運動的大規(guī)模展開,"邊疆"開始特指白人拓荒者與印第安人活動區(qū)的分野。通過統(tǒng)計白人分布密度并以"人口線"的形式在地圖上予以標(biāo)明,"邊疆"得以具體呈現(xiàn)。特納進(jìn)一步賦予美國"邊疆"以移動性和征服性的抽象內(nèi)涵,并以此表達(dá)了一種承自于歐洲啟蒙時代但卻具有"美國例外論"色彩的社會進(jìn)化觀:"邊疆"的推移,造就了美國本土非均衡的但卻是永續(xù)性的發(fā)展。言外之意,自然意義上的北美荒野雖已拓殖完畢,但是,國內(nèi)亟須改革的社會新領(lǐng)域和海外有待擴展的新勢力范圍,構(gòu)成了美國延續(xù)繁榮與霸權(quán)的"新邊疆"。
[Abstract]:According to traditional European English, "frontier" generally refers to the border between the two countries. In the United States, this meaning was initially adopted. However, with the large-scale expansion of the westward movement in the 19th century, the Frontier began to refer specifically to the division between the white pioneers and the Indian areas. By counting the white distribution density and marking it on the map in the form of "population line", the "frontier" can be concretely presented. Turner further gave the American "frontier" an abstract connotation of mobility and subjugation, and thus expressed a view of social evolution inherited from the European Enlightenment but with the color of "American exceptionalism": the passage of "frontier". It has created a non-balanced but sustainable development in the United States. By implication, although the wilderness of North America in the natural sense has been colonized, the new fields of society and the new sphere of influence that need to be reformed at home and abroad constitute the "new frontier" for the continued prosperity and hegemony of the United States.
