In order to make the South and Norrh waterways of the South Branch to be stable, the following three measures are required. (1) To stabilize the dividing point and prevent its furher retreat by strong engineering structures.(2) To control the water and sediment distribution and make them basically to be balanced in the South and North water ways, and prevent the shifting of the thalweg.(3) To stabilize the Biandan sandbank and prevent violent change of shoals and channels causing large amount of sediment to move downstream.

    Due to an urgent need for taming the Yellow River, it is of important practical and theoretical significances to study systematically the environmental evolution and the regularities of water and sediment movement in the Yellow River basin. An outline is given in this paper concerning the important significance of this study, the content and principal objectives of the research project, the progresses made so far and the working arrangement for the near future. In the recent two year studies of this project, a series of background values have been obtained which can be used as a basis for revealing the environmental evolution, and the understanding has been deepened concerning the regularities of water and sediment movement. All these have accumulated valuable and reliable scientific data for comprehensive analises and all-aspect studies in the coming two years.

Through the practice of Sanmenxia project, valuable experiences have been accumulated concerning the understanding and harnessing of the Yellow River and the construction and management of projects on a muddy river. By use of the collected data and research results, and the method of system analysis, the main laws of scouring and silting caused by the reservoir are developed in this paper, which conform to the law and characteristics of water and sediment movement in muddy river.
