米歇爾·法柏(1960~)生于荷蘭,是當代英語文壇著名的小說家、詩人。其長篇小說《絳紅雪白的花瓣》出版于2002年,故事背景設于19世紀70年代的倫敦,敘事方式從當代視角反觀維多利亞社會,該類型的小說被稱為“新維多利亞小說”。新維多利亞小說已成為當代英語文學的一個重要流派并受到評論界越來越多的關注。本研究采用解構主義的視角,以米勒的重復理論作為指導框架,以文本細讀的方法,通過文本結構中“柏拉圖式重復”和“尼采式重復”這兩條相互交織的線索,探索小說中詞句、意象、讖謠的重復以及反復出現(xiàn)的事件和場景對于人物形象塑造和情節(jié)發(fā)展的重要作用,同時引入新批評派復義理論,通過對文本的開放闡釋以及敘事中出現(xiàn)的一系列相似情節(jié)對每種解讀的反復驗證探索新維多利亞小說中可能存在的更多重復方式。小說中的人物疊加了希臘神話、童話和經(jīng)典維多利亞小說的多重原型,并通過二元對立的消解打造出更為復雜的人物和情節(jié),以此體現(xiàn)新維多利亞小說對傳統(tǒng)維多利亞小說的繼承和突破。小說在主題上還與現(xiàn)代主義小說相契合,通過揭示維多利亞人對現(xiàn)實的無奈和對未來的無限困惑折射出當代人同樣面臨的生存困境和文化焦慮,體現(xiàn)出強烈的現(xiàn)實意義。
